Amish response to covid

robdot says...

That position is even worse. Wtf. We know it’s dangerous and we don’t care? Let’s kill grandma ! Yay ! For Jesus ! Let’s kill our parents ! Yay ! We don’t care ! Let’s all knowingly spread a pandemic ! Yay ! Maybe I’ll get lucky and kill a non believer !Yahoo ! What the actual fuck dude.

Nobody in this video says anything remotely like that. The Amish guy says "we all got covid". Nor does he say that fewer Amish died than English, or that they didn't get as sick. What he does say is that some things are more important to them than trying to never get sick, or to live as long as humanly possible.

Why I’m ALL-IN On Tesla Stock

newtboy says...

All in on one stock is not smart investing. Not one bit. Never. Ask anyone who invested in the highly profitable Enron stock. You might get lucky, and you might lose everything.

S&P beat Tesla by over 10% last year. If you bought Tesla last November, you already lost 1/3 of your value.

S&P also doesn’t have the highest PE ratio of all large public companies trading today at >175. (20-25 are considered good PE ratios, over 30 is overvalued, under 15 is selling at a discount)
Bubbles burst. Just saying.

I'll just leave this light reading here....

Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza emerged in Mexico in March 2009 and by June 10 had rapidly spread to 74 countries (1,2). Nonpharmaceutical interventions for pandemic influenza at the community level were recommended by the World Health Organization before and during the pandemic (3,4). One such nonpharmaceutical intervention was quarantine of contacts of persons with confirmed cases. A key question in closed settings (e.g., military barracks) was how to prevent a secondary outbreak of influenza among those quarantined.

The first identified case of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 in mainland People’s Republic of China was imported from the United States and reported on May 11, 2009 (5). On May 29, the Chinese Ministry of Health required that each confirmed case-patient and each contact be isolated and quarantined in 1 separate room to contain transmission of the virus

There weren't shutdowns because H1N1 wasn't spread before symptoms show, wasn't as easily spread, and wasn't 1/10 as deadly. By denying travel to and quarantining the visibly sick, it was relatively easy to stop the spread. There were many travel restrictions including travel bans, but they were mostly voluntarily. There was screening of passengers and sick ones were denied travel. Also, thanks to preparations, a vaccine only took months to create.
Yes, we got lucky, but we certainly didn't JUST get lucky, we took action AND got lucky.

So H1N1 could have "been the big one" yet there were no shutdowns or travel restrictions. They just got lucky that time. Supply stockpiles can only do so much, which is admittedly more than Trump did.

Maybe we can learn lessons from China. They managed to avoid large outbreaks in Beijing and Shanghai, seems like the virus went directly from Wuhan to the rest of the world.

USA and russian relations at a "most dangerous moment"

vil says...

@enoch
I did my best :-) I honestly feel threatened by this attitude of feeding the bear crumbs and pretending he is a friend. Also cant help liking Abby, so very disappointed.

@newtboy
For russia Assad is a (replaceable) puppet, bolstering Assad is just using that puppet for their own needs. ISIS is a threat because it directly supports terrorist groups within Russia. Sending in their air force and that coal powered smoking joke of an aircraft carrier was a military excercise with minimal losses and huge political and home security gains. Expensive though.

One cant just send in a task force to take out a dictator simply because one believes it would be the right thing to do. Countries generally have a limitless supply of local mafioso would-be dictators or religious leaders which the local population prefers to foreign rule. Religion and politics are just a thin veil for local tribal wars. In spite of Syria being a fairly civilised country before the current events I doubt there was ever a "democratic" alternative to Assad. Sometimes you just get lucky and the dictator decides he wants democracy (South Korea, Chile, Gorbatchev inadvertently).

F**k the whole middle east actually IMHO, twice. The Kurds never get any love from anyone and they´ve survived in the middle of this crazy shitstorm for millenia. Yet they will never have a country of their own. Even "Palestinians" created only in the last few decades appear to be closer to that goal. Not fair at all.

I feel hard work and determination creates more "chances" for you to "get lucky."

The person striving to improve himself or his surroundings will generally come into contact with more opportunities. More so than the person that decides, "Everything is pure luck, why put in effort?" and puts forth the bare minimum.

To be fair, a better title for the video would be "10 songs that happen to actually sound decent when played with "Get Lucky" but I suppose that title would be too long.

As great as this video was, the impression I got with many of those players was more "how to adapt player X's most famous solo/riff to Get Lucky".

Still fun to listen to. =)
