Exactly !
Driving ont the freeway @60Mph and having the car infront break it would invaluable to know if he was just slightly slowing or it was an emergency break.
I'm sure there must be some reason this hasn't been implemented....

Well, he did publish Phantoms before King's IT. Doen't mean it's better, but well, ancient things living underground, likening itself to Legion. I don't believe I have read any of his books since Dragon Tears, in hish school, so im not really one to defend him. For me, it's just cool to read an author who lives and drives the same freeways as yourself, and that's Koontz. I can be having coffee in Newport Beach and read about supernatural occurances in Newport Beach.

i wont judge you too harshly for liking koontz.
but i read him after i read the old school masters.so i recognized many of his plot lines.

but he does have a smooth style, which i call "crapper"reading.
you know,a book you keep in the loo and read a few pages while you do your business?
koontz is perfect crapper reading.

California Cops Lose It Over a Drone

That place always reminds me of Texas City (a massive oil refinery just outside Houston). It's a 5-10minute drive on the freeway through some horrendous stench. I feel terrible for anyone living within 10 miles of either place.

Yeah, that place sucks!! You can smell it coming for miles away and there is no option to just turn up your ac and hope the smell goes away, it's terrible. That place is definitely evil and should be shut down.

CGP Grey: The Simple Solution to Traffic

poolcleaner says...

If following the always in the middle rule, this should follow, but if you don't want to be a perfect driver, at least when merging, follow what is called the "zipper rule".

The zipper rule looks like it sounds: Allow one person to merge in front of you and one person behind you, like a zipper. If you're merging with one car in front of you and one car behind, allow one car already on the freeway to pass between you and the car merging in front of you. The person behind you should do the same for you and any car behind them.

This is something both cars on the freeway and cars merging onto it have to agree to though, as one asshole spoils it. Of course, if someone is tooooo slow (another problem) the zipper rule doesn't work perfectly either.

But the spirit of the zipper rule remains, despite how it is modified. If someone hogs the road, tailgating the car I should be merging behind, I simply follow the zipper rule after that asshat driver. If I were to fight over my true zipper position, I'd cause an even bigger problem than was already present -- and I gain.. what? One car's distance. That's nothing.

Not even 30 cars distance means a damn (a couple seconds?), so there's zero reasons to constantly weave in and out of a congested road, because you risk your vehicle for mere seconds. A terrible bet to make given the odds, no matter how skilled you are, because the lanes slow down at random intervals based on the random number of idiots weaving through traffic causing phantom intersections. Meanwhile, the lane you weaved out of has cleared and the guy being patient passes you by. Just fucking stay in your goddamn lane until you don't need to be there.

I learned this over time, after deciding to be patient and observe the distance traveled by impatient drivers compared to myself staying in one lane. I find that I will often pass the impatient driver by because they're making so many choices and fewer lane choices are ever more optimal than simply waiting for your lane to clear up, so rather than slowly gaining ground, they make a couple gains and then lane change into a briefly cleared lane that then halt once they zoom up to tailgate the person who has no more distance to travel. If I don't end up passing these impatient lane changers, the minimal distance they gained is only seconds, as when they reach their off ramp, they will be waiting idly by, as I catch up and pass them. If they had simply stayed in the same lane the entire way, they often would have arrived at the same time as if they hadn't changed lanes at all.

Why you shouldn’t drive slowly in the left lane

newtboy says...

I am so firmly in driver category #1 that I printed my own T-shirts that have the road sign most people ignore that says "slower traffic keep right" and on the back they say "keep right except to pass".
I used to get upset at my grandmother who would drive 40mph on the freeway to be "safe". I would repeat 'How is it not a wreck if we get rear ended by someone going the speed limit? You know we get hurt MORE being hit unexpectedly from the rear, right?' It never helped.
Thank you Vox, for explaining it well.

Massive Police Chase Against Stunt Motorcycles

newtboy says...

I disagree on nearly all points.

Can't outrun the radio. That's why they have backup. They can't outrun the helicopter in town either, and there's no escape on the freeway if the cops roadblock it.
I guess you didn't notice the one they did hit. No one pulled a gun and attacked the cop, did they?
Could have trapped them all in the underpass if they were on the ball. They should have come in with 4-5 cars at once and blocked it off front and rear, then shot anyone trying to escape.
Really, you assume they're so dumb they would all commit crimes armed (making just dirty riding a violent felony) and have a shootout with the cops (which would instantly make any group riding a SWAT priority from now on). Guaranteed, the first time that happens is the last time more than 3 motorcycles ride together without being stopped and harassed anywhere in the country.
Couple of hundred?!? I only saw around 50. Cops take control of riots that have thousands -tens of thousands of actors all the time. That's no excuse or reason.
They aren't any danger to the police or public if they're wrecked on the road.
Police follow in hopes of catching them in any way, be it trapped, fallen, wrecked, given up, went home, on camera, etc.
Lots that can be done. Since they have multiple camera views of all of them, they can stop them any time they see a bike that looks like one of them on the road and try to put them in prison for wreckless endangerment (a good reason all riders should HATE these people, innocent bikers get harassed for having similar bikes all the time). I do understand that SOME of those bikes are stolen, or unregistered, but most are not and those riders may give up their compatriots.
1%ers only make up 1%.

My point is, if police take this seriously like the attack on the public that it is and aggressively go after them with the cop cars, they will think twice and not operate on YOUR assumptions that the cops won't do a thing....which is why they continue this crap, that assumption. If every single time a group goes 'riding dirty' at least one of them ends up dead or paralyzed, it will end FAST.
You know how much damage that cop car would suffer by running them over....none! ;-)

Chairman_woo said:

They were playing with the police the entire time, pretty much all of those bikes could outrun even the police helicopter if they wanted to. (not exaggerating)

If the police took to more aggressive stopping tactics, the riders would simply give it all the beans and disappear as soon as they saw them, instead of goading them like they did in that vid.

They could try and set up a fortified position in their path or take swipes into the crowd but that leads into the big one for me; many of them likely have guns & other weapons! If the police escalate the violence to death and serious injury by ramming & spike traps or back them into a corner, they would be giving the bikers incentive to fight back.

I might argue that escalation of violence would be more dangerous to the public than the anti-social riding.

There was a couple of 100 of them at least. Unless you are going to call in the national guard or some such, no police force is likely to have the manpower to win that fight if it came to it. (these people are demonstrably a bit crazy after all)

The police aren't stupid. Ethics aside, a gang of a few 100 lunatics is just more than almost any police force can deal with when together. That's why they don't scatter, they know that in a pack they are basically untouchable.

Police follow and hope to catch out the ones that fall off or otherwise make a mistake. Beyond that all they can really do is go after the gang in the traditional way; informants, infiltrators, slip ups and so on.

I understand the outrage, but practically speaking there is little more can be done other than subsequent investigations by the gang unit. Very difficult as you can't prove a given bike was involved without plates and chassis numbers. Or for that matter that a given individual was riding it at the time anyway.

Dangerous People, Rape and Donald Trump

newtboy says...

WTF?!?
"A crowdfunded poem"?!?!?
REALLY?!? People crowd fund POEMS?!? And awful poems about ignoring her gullibility and lack of self protection that paint any helpful person as an evil attacker? Huh?

OK, it's true that SOME people wishing to hurt you try to trick you by saying they want to help you somehow, but to say that anyone trying to help protect you is really trying to harm you is just paranoid to the extreme.

Most people who ask if you need/want help are simply trying to help.
If someone INSISTS on giving you 'help' that you didn't ask for or don't obviously need....beware.
If you're walking down the freeway with a can of gas and someone stops to offer a ride, that doesn't mean they're trying to kidnap you.

In China A Bridge Retrofit Takes 43 hrs Instead Of 2 Months

newtboy says...

They replaced two much smaller freeway bridges near me in the last 15 years. They each took over 2 years to complete...but we have wet winters (N California) that slowed construction even more.

artician said:

How long does this take in the US (all jokes aside)?

Kind of gross propaganda, unless that's just how their bridges come out of the packaging.

Of all the worlds cultures I'd think China would find a solution for asphalt.

Guy Jumps Nearly 200 Feet Off a Cliff

artician says...

When I was in highschool there were some ~85 foot cliffs up the freeway from where we lived. We'd jump off those every summer, but no one figured it was dangerous. It was just the highest place we could find.
I don't know if we'd have jumped off a 200 foot cliff if we found one.
