Elon Musk introduces the TESLA ENERGY POWERWALL

newtboy says...

Solar shingles will be much harder to pay for themselves, they cost more and produce less, but they do look less obtrusive if that's an issue.
EDIT: One thing they have going for them is you can trap the water off your roof for yard usage like a metal roof, where normal tar shingles contaminate the water requiring a filter/oil separator. Here in Ca, that's a HUGE benefit, we have a terrible water shortage.
I live in N Ca, where we get tons of fog, and my panels/system have paid for themselves in under 1/2 their expected lifespan...so now I'm set for 10-12 years of free electricity, even though I live where there's less sun than most places. I can't fathom why every home in Phoenix isn't covered in them...it makes no sense whatsoever that they aren't taking advantage of their sun.

Inspired by this announcement, I started looking at solar panels yesterday. Actually I learned that there are also "solar shingles" that replace regular shingles, and blend in better, but are not as efficient as PV panels.

I signed up to be notified on the Tesla site - would be neat to own.

I also learned that northeast USA has more average sunlight (~4 kWh/m^2/Day) than Germany, which leads the world in solar adoption. Obviously places in southwest are better suited (~6.5 kWh/m^2/Day)

Liquid Nitrogen Pool Party (AKA Death Trap)

newtboy says...

OMG!!! Drinking liquid nitrogen?!?! *WTF people!?! *EIA

My brother's 16th birthday party was really close to that. He heated the pool to over 100 deg and put 50lbs of dry ice in it. Lucky for him, the fog wasn't as thick as in this video and no one had to be rescued, but the entire back yard was about 2 ft thick in CO2 fog and covered with drunken teenagers rocking out to Thriller (which had just come out at the time).

Tokyo dense fog

newtboy says...

I had no idea they have a statue of liberty in Tokyo!

Pretty, but it has nothing on SF fog, and we beat SF most of the time in thickness of fog, we just have nothing but 350' tall trees sticking above it here on the far North Coast (of California). We're so foggy (normally) that I've been told our airport was built as a training facility to teach instrument flying for WW2, it was the foggiest place in the US, so they put an airport here!

The Truth About Being Single

poolcleaner says...

I didn't date someone because when I leaned in to kiss her I could see all of these unsightly random hairs poking up from under her make up. I almost puked.

Sorry, ladies. But unfortunately those random hairs, if not attended to for like, I don't know, months and months at a time, they can start growing. Even as a guy if I see that shit on my face, it's gone. So I just couldn't deal and actually turned out of the kiss.

It was classic. Classic like the disgusting close up shots from Ren & Stimpy. I could even hear the tugboat fog horn blasting 2 tones of gtfo pork chops sandwiches. God, it did not smell good either.

The Oath of Fëanor

gorillaman says...

When Morgoth in that day of doom
had slain the trees and filled with gloom
the shining land of Valinor,
there Fëanor and his sons then swore
the mighty oath upon the hill
of tower-crownéd Tún, that still
wrought wars and sorrow in the world.
From darkling seas the fogs unfurled
their blinding shadows grey and cold
where Glingal once had bloomed with gold
and Belthil bore its silver flowers.
The mists were mantled round the towers
of the Elves' white city by the sea.
There countless torches fitfully
did start and twinkle, as the Gnomes
were gathered to their fading homes,
and thronged the long and winding stair
that led to the wide echoing square.

There Fëanor mourned his jewels divine
the Silmarils he made. Like wine
his wild and potent words them fill;
a great host harkens deathly still.
But all he said both wild and wise,
half truth and half the fruit of lies
that Morgoth sowed in Valinor,
in other songs and other lore
recorded is. He bade them flee
from lands divine, to cross the sea,
the pathless plains, the perilous shores
where ice-infested water roars;
to follow Morgoth to the unlit earth
leaving their dwellings and olden mirth;
to go back to the Outer Lands
to wars and weeping. There their hands
they joined in vows, those kinsmen seven,
swearing beneath the stars of Heaven,
by Varda the Holy that them wrought
and bore them each with radiance fraught
and set them in the deeps to flame.
Timbrenting's holy height they name,
whereon are built the timeless halls
of Manwë Lord of Gods. Who calls
these names in witness may not break
his oath, though earth and heaven shake.

Curufin, and Celegorm the fair,
Damrod and Díriel were there,
and Cranthir dark, and Maidros tall
(whom after torment should befall),
and Maglor the mighty who like the sea
with deep voice sings yet mournfully.
'Be he friend or foe, or seed defiled
of Morgoth Bauglir, or mortal child
that in after days on earth shall dwell,
no law, nor love, nor league of hell,
nor might of Gods, nor moveless fate
shall defend him from wrath and hate
of Fëanor's sons, who takes and steals
or finding keeps the Silmarils,
the thrice-enchanted globes of light
that shine until the final night.'

Liftoff for NASA's Orion Spaceship

Zawash says...

It's viewed at a very long range, through fog and clouds. The perspective is because of the very long range, and the image is very dimmed because of the cloud cover.
The image is underexposed, and therefore we can only clearly see the very brightest part of the image, which is the flames inside the thrusters - that part is hidden in severely overexposed flare blooms in all the other recordings. The rest of the rocket is barely seen through the clouds, and would have been a bit more visible if the image had a lighter exposure, but then the nozzles would have been bright blooms, and we wouldn't have been able to see any details inside.
If you look closely, you faintly see not only the spaceship, but also the huge flickering flame columns behind the nozzles.

Brazil drought linked to Amazon deforestation - BBC News

newtboy says...

Unless you're talking about giant redwoods, which take moisture out of the air more than out of the ground, oddly. They have to live in fog belts in order to get enough moisture up to the top.
And unless you're talking about at night, when trees do aerobic respiration, and use O2 to make some CO2.

notarobot said:

When a forest breathes in, it takes carbon out of the air. When it breathes out, it releases oxygen and moisture (which is drawn up from the ground.) If there is enough forest, the moisture actually changes the local weather conditions.

3D Display Projects Images Into Mid-Air (No Screen)

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Wow, pretty Scifi stuff. I didn't think a screenless display would be possible without fog or droplets or something. Neat. Don't see how they could ever do colour though.

Reminds me of foglets or "utility fog", something that futurist Ray Kurzweil predicts having widespread adoption in the mid 2040's. Essentially you could make any physical shape you can think of, almost instantly.

Easybreath snorkling mask

MilkmanDan says...

I've been snorkeling loads of times, and while I don't really have any problems with the standard/basic equipment, this looks like a cool idea and definitely easier for first-timers.

I don't think it looks difficult to maintain -- with a normal mask, the secret that often goes untold due to sanitary reasons I suppose is that the best way to clean them and to prevent fog-up is to spit in there, rub it around, and then give it a quick saltwater rinse. If the anti-fogging mechanism of this works well, then you could just skip that step. If it doesn't work as advertised, well, I guess the spit technique would still hold up just fine.

As for maintaining/cleaning the breathing lines, I would imagine that they can be flushed with water. I don't think I've ever worried about that with a normal snorkel, I don't really see why this would be different.

The issue with increased difficulty in pressure equalization (since you can't plug your nose) is a problem, but I'd say the target audience for this product is newcomers to snorkeling, and they are probably not going to be the type to do much diving down past the 6-12 foot depth where that will be an important issue.

The only other thing that I can think of is that with a normal snorkel, clearing water from the tube is pretty easy with a big exhaled blow. If water gets into this thing, for whatever reason, I dunno if it is possible to clear it without surfacing and taking the whole thing off.

Careless Whisper - Vintage 1930's Jazz Wham! Cover

Payback says...

Ya, all through this I kept imagining her singing a SLOWER version, Jessica Rabbit gown, dark smokey bar (fog machine, gotta protect that voice), single diffuse spotlight, and got the shivers.

Quirky, but I agree that the upbeat tempo doesn't really convey heart ache or loss to me...
