If an American Football Coach Coached Soccer

aaronfr jokingly says...

This is more confusing than the offside rule.

I know what FIFA is; I just didn't know there was more than one of them; or that there was retirement plan for FIFAs.

You're right because that's the ONLY thing we referees use is the laws of the game right? No, there's constant discussion among the top referees in the nation, I know I've been in the room with them. I've been trained by FIFAs and former FIFAs, it's the most confusing law period. Don't try to pretend it's not, you have interpretations you have instructions and you have Position Papers, and you have actual real situations where you have to apply all of those things.

So yes you can try to talk about it being simple and you can try to teach it simply, but it's not. There is way more to it, I've been in the debates, I've helped former FIFAs write the interpretations to FIFA for better explanation. It should be simpler, but in practice it's not.

What's so confusing about offside?
The laws of the game state:
"A player is in an offside position if [..] he is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent"
and
"A player in an offside position is only penalised if, at the moment the ball
touches or is played by one of his team, he is, in the opinion of the referee,
involved in active play by:
• interfering with play or
• interfering with an opponent or
• gaining an advantage by being in that position"

And that's basically it.

Inviting arguments by deliberately allowing the decision to be subjective - sure. But confusing?

Unlucky Soccer Player

Quboid says...

This sort of thing really isn't representative of the game. It happens and, as such, it happens too much but it's not the epidemic that it's made out to be.
It's always happened but it's only since we got a thousand slow motion any-angle replays that it's been noticed.

I don't know what 'the box' means but what the referee sees in the moment is nearly always what stands. No replays, no post-match analysis, unless the newspapers cause an almighty stink - causing justice to be dealt out based on media hysteria.

The official bodies say that this is to not undermine the referee, although I think it would be just the opposite and that FIFA and IFAB are undermining referees right now by letting TV views see all their mistakes without letting them use the same technology to avoid such mistakes. It wouldn't have taken 5 seconds for a video referee to review this and see what happened so he could relay this down to the referee who would book #7 for simulation and revoke #8's second booking.

It doesn't matter in the long run but IMHO, #7 doesn't look like a little pansy to me. He doesn't look soft, he doesn't look weak. Player #7 looks like a cynical cheat, not a softie. He's been clever and gained a significant advantage for his team.

He'd only look weak if anyone actually believed he was that hurt but no one did, he just forced the referee into making a decision (as he can't act like he didn't see it). I suspect the referee knew better, but he could only officiate on what he saw - the ball going from player A's boot into player B's face and even if player B isn't hurt that's against the rules if intentional. As play had stopped, it's rather unlikely to accidentally hit someone's face ... but not impossible, obviously.

There's plenty of tough players who I would not want to get into a fight with, but it's not as tough as ice hockey which seems to be a game for psychopaths. It's not as tough as rugby or American football on the whole, although the distinction's not as clear cut.

AeroMechanical said:

Yeah, but I hear they're giving players penalties and fines in the NBA for it now.

This, of course, really requires officiation from the box, which I'm not sure soccer has? Anyway it should. I don't watch a lot of soccer, and people are always telling me what a tough sport it is, but from the bits I've seen, they look like a bunch of little pansies to me. They should sort that out.

Why Brazilians are Protesting the World Cup

spawnflagger says...

They should at least benefit from all the added infrastructure (roads, bridges, mass transit, etc) that was necessary to upgrade in order to host the games.

I don't understand why FIFA couldn't change the way the tournament is played and scheduled such that fewer stadiums are required... I could see needing to build 1 or 2 more stadiums, but why 12 (stadiums in Brazil for world cup 2014, 3 brand new, others renovated).

note: 30 billion brazilian reals = $13.76 billion usd

Why Brazilians are Protesting the World Cup

yellowc says...

This is very good.

All the wrong people get rich from the WC and FIFA laughs very heartily all the way to the bank. The whole process of bidding and breaking your countries back to host these things is borderline ridiculous and the "privilege and gratitude" you're supposed to show because your corrupt politicians want to line their pockets is equally ridiculous.

Hosting these events should be put to public vote, I don't feel this is absurd, there are only two such events, the Olympics and the World Cup. The politicians should have to argue their case to why it would benefit the country, with an *actual* plan for trying to make good of it, not just claim "Oh trust me, this will be GREAT for the country"....based on? All the other failures? Sounds promising.

One very special free kick

Yogi says...

This is actually not considered legal in the Laws of the Game. I'm looking to see if FIFA has weighed in on this yet but it doesn't look like it. Anyways in Law 13 - Free Kicks it explicitly states "the ball is in play when it is kicked and moves".

I was thinking about this and compare it to if a keeper was in his own penalty area and used his arm to knock the ball into play. That wouldn't be allowed even though he is allowed to use his hands inside his own penalty area. So I think it's pretty obvious, kicking is to be done with the foot.

I'm Gonna Smoke Some Weed - Thrift Shop Parody

eric3579 says...

Lyrics:
Im gonna smoke some weed, only got 20 dollas in my pocket
Imma huntin, looking for a pot shop, this is fucking awesome!

Walk into my house like what up, i got some good pot
I'm just pumped up got some herb from the pot shop
Ice in my fridge it used to be frosty
My friends like "Damn, that's a stoned ass donkey!"
Rollin' in hella high, looking like it's fifa time
Dominating all my friends, as I eat some chili fries
Draped in a snuggie with my girl sitting next to me
Probably shouldn't have had a big gulp full of ice tea
PISS!
But shit it was 99 cents!

I be blazin and smokin it
Bout to go and get some munchie snacks, passing up on those cracker jacks
Reeces Pieces are where it's at, Gotta get me some soda pop
Cotton mouth has been creeping up
But can't remember where I put my keys,
Yeah, that's what's up.
Imma take your grandpa's ride, Imma take your grandpa's ride
No for real, ask your grandpa, Can I take his 65?
Deville Cruisin to my local Publix
Nothing better than rolling with 2 super fly chicks!
They had frozen burritos, I bought frozen burritos
I bought some Ben and Jerry's, then I bought some Cheetos
Hello, Hello, my main man Obama
A couple states have just reformed their laws on marijuana
Whatcha gonna do, send the feds there? Hell no!
The DEA's would be like "Ah, they got Volcano"

What you know about the science of marijuana?
What you know about people suffering from glaucoma?
They need it, they need it, it helps them with their condition
If don't believe me, then just ask some eye physicians
Thank your granddad for voting for that guy Richard
Nixon is the President who made the plant illegal
But science is now showing that its medicine for people
And the private sector's fighting to keep all of that illegal
Alcohol and Tobacco, Pharmaceutical, Prisons
I'll take those four major lobby groups and fight those motherfuckers
They making money day and night, all those motherfuckers
And bribing congress out of sight, all those motherfuckers
They be like, "Oh, it's immoral and unhealthy"
I'm like how many people are you making wealthy
Anti-marijuana lobbies are making all kinds of profits
And they don't want you to stop it cause of all the special interests
I call that getting swindled and pimped, shit
I call that getting tricked by the government, that law's hella old
So its time to update it, regulate it, and then get it under state control
Peep Game, look into my political telescope
Think it's going to stay like this forever, nah, it hella won't, nah, it hella won't.

Let's end the war on drugs, It's time to pull the plug
These special interest groups are nothing more than corporate thugs
Let's end the war on weed, the people have agreed.
These special interest groups have kept these laws with bribery

Imma smoke some weed, only got 20 dollas in my pocket
Imma huntin, looking for a pot shop, this is fucking awesome!

Only one player has ever died on field in the NFL. He died of a heart attack. Your story comes from before they wore helmets and American Football was more closely related to rugby.
89 players have died on field during sanctioned FIFA matches.
What was your point?

Kids die every year playing this game...also people die from injuries as a result from playing in the NFL and Football in general. Almost every year in this nation there is a story simply about a kid dying in practice during the summer due to overheating or exhaustion. That's why they forced us to drink TONS of water until our stomachs hurt. But because they don't die ON THE FIELD that is supposed to mean something? Do you think that because tons of people die in the hospital of cancer that hospitals give people cancer?

Yeah, this whole thing is a bunch of bullshit. They're modern gladiators, and people who tell themselves otherwise are lying to themselves.

To read some of the comments though, you'd think I said I laugh when people suffer heart attacks and collapse.
Read my comment below yours when you get a chance. -jj

craziest football penalty you've seen. ever

hermannthegerman says...

In short, more or less:

According to the Fifa-rule the team which scored the crazy penalty won and would have gone up to the next higher league for the next season, but according to an italian rule the penalty off the crossbar should not have counted. The losing team protested the result and the protest was upheld and the game was re-scheduled and had to be played again.
