police drones clearing the streets before the royal wedding

Sagemind says...

Charlie Veitch, the founder of the peace activist group ‘The Love Police’, was pre-emptively arrested on Thursday the 28th of April 2011, around 1615h, on an allegation of a conspiracy to cause public nuisance. As the video evidence shows, Charlie was not read his rights, and no warrant was presented for his arrest or for the search of his living space.

He was held for 16 hours at Parkside Police Station in Cambridge. Outraged locals, students, and activists protested outside the station, and concerned citizens from around the world inundated the station with phone calls to voice their concern of this totalitarian police behaviour. Parkside police were obstructive to his lawyer, family, and partner, let alone friends and supporters, by not providing any information of his wellbeing or whereabouts.

At around 1000h on Friday the 29th of April 2011, Charlie was collected by the Metropolitan Police from Parkside and taken to an undisclosed police station in London for 8 hours. Efforts by his lawyer, family, and partner to locate him were made in vain – he had effectively been ‘disappeared’ into the police system. Charlie was denied his right to a phone call from London, again continuing the obstruction of his access to his lawyer, family, partner and supporters. He requested that the police telephone his partner to inform her of his whereabouts, which was promised but not performed. With his family in the dark as to his whereabouts, concern was considerably growing.

Charlie was eventually released on bail 23 hours and 45 minutes after his arrest at approximately 1600h on Friday 29th April from Edmonton Police Station, London – just within the 24 hour limit that a person can be lawfully arrested and detained without charge. - http://www.cveitch.org/

The Difference Speeding Makes

CrushBug says...

I always have mixed feelings about these kinds of PSAs. On the one hand, yes traveling slower shortens your stopping distance. On the other hand, there are a whole bunch of factors that go into the speed you travel at on any given road. The issue above was straight-line braking and I have avoided accidents due to being able to maneuver my vehicle. Also, I noticed that the faster car hit the side edge of the tail bumper which would cause massive damage, while the slower car hit the side safely panel on the truck. Pretty sure the faster car wouldn't have had so much damage if it had hit the same panel. I think they did this intentionally for dramatic effect. I think this actually takes away from their message.

What is the posted speed limit? What is the commonly understood speed limit? Highway 2 south of Edmonton is posted as 110 km/h (~68 mph). Common speed that most people travel at is 130 km/h (~80 mph). Is that a problem? No, not really. Everyone going at around the same speed works fine. People going 90 or 150 are the problem. The RCMP don't even pull you over unless you are traveling unsafely (fast lane changes or traveling over 130). I have driven through about 20 speed traps on Highway 2 at 130 and have never been pulled over.

Am I a good driver? Sorta. I know of a handful of friends who are better than me, including my wife. I am attentive and I know how to spot danger and how to avoid it. I maintain my vehicle and make sure that all steering, braking and yes, acceleration systems are in good working order. I have rarely used my cell phone when driving and when there are complicated road sections I usually stop talking and ignore any passengers to focus on the driving. I believe that this is why I haven't had a traffic accident in 15 years, but have avoided many. Speed is always a factor in accidents, but it is rarely the sole cause.

The vehicle is also a factor. I have driven down a 4 lane road marked 60 km/h and have checked my speed in my car and I am doing 80. That speed felt safe to me. I have driven that same road in my parent's van and have checked my speed at it felt like I was speeding at 55. I know that van accelerates, brakes and steers much worse than my car.

I believe that one of the biggest factors is driver training. I hate the fact that it takes almost no skill to get a driver's license and that there are no re-tests or other requirements. When I worked at a big chemical plant, long ago, fork lift drivers had all kinds of training and driving tests and re-tests to make sure they were operating safely. Almost all accidents had a root cause in a lack of training or experience and corrective action was taken. Drivers on the road? Whatever, just let them answer 10 multiple-choice questions and give them a plastic card with no follow-up. Drive safely!

Damnit media, He just wants to eat his Cookie ( 2:14)

Skeeve says...

The media here in Edmonton is having a field day with this, but I have mixed views regarding this incident.

Firstly, he's being an ass and could have handled it much better. The first thing he should have done when he saw those vultures from CTV was stop, tell them that there would be a media event/press conference in half an hour and that he had no comment until then. Hopefully the media would have stopped following him then but even if they didn't there would be no story for them to run.

Secondly, the media people were being pushy assholes who should have just understood that he wasn't going to comment and should have just waited for the press conference for a comment.

Either way, it's stupid that this is becoming 'big news'.

1200 Pound Pumpkin Dropped on a Pontiac

Porksandwich says...

Plus most of these dinners and fund raisers attracting the rich to cough up the dough are more about letting people know they donated. Whether it be other rich people or the general populace....they want it known that they were there to give away money. It's just another competition to most of them. Not that it matters as long as the charity gets the majority of the money being donated. But it's for the attention more than it is for the actual charity, most of em probably forget what the hell they are donating toward a week later.

Some geniuses at the University of Alberta in Edmonton do this every year to "Make Poverty History". Because renting a crane and buying a beat-up car and a huge pumpkin, then destroying them, really helps out those in need.

I used to think the same thing about celebrity dinners. But some people don't have the motivation to give otherwise, they have to be enticed. For most counts, I think the ends justifies the means, being that the ends in this case are not immoral. Having 100% of 0 isn't better than having 50% of any other number (that isn't negative)

It is promotion. To call attention to the issue. Up until you posted this, I didn't know they did that, nor did I know about that program. See? It is just raised my awareness on this issue.

I am going to harvest some of the bambo peices from the window covering and make a scaffolding for my off center aloe plant, its going to snap its base as it is growing at a 60 degree angle from its base. I just need some wire from a hobby shop like "Michaels" thin thin wire.. Or lurn me some Thatching skills. Should look great when I am done.

Awesome Canadian National Anthem: Stanley Cup finals

Dag, that's off the Bob & Doug LP, I used to listen to that a looooooooong time ago =D I think it was sung by Geddy Lee?
As for the Oilers, Oiltown is an amazing hockey place to visit. I love at 1:00 the equipment manager really going to town for it. The oils may be having some terrible luck this year, but next year Jodran Eberle (Captain Clutch!) and Taylor Hall (if the draft picks go right,) are coming in. Those two along will make Edmonton a power house again.
