Star Trek: Worf on Religion

jwray says...

>> ^Winstonfield_Pennypacker:

Sigh - without stepping into the issue of theism/atheism in real life - labelling this clip as 'atheist' is moronic because Worf was actually a deeply religious person according to the Klingon belief system. He in fact chided the Federation a bit in a couple TNG & DS9 episodes because they lacked a spiritual aspect. Interpreting this as an "atheist" clip is quoting two words of a fundie preach who said, "Christ died" and calling him an atheist. Stupidly inaccurate.

You forgot about the "they were more trouble than they were worth" part.

Theism/atheism and following ancient traditions are two completely separable things.

How Star Trek 4 should have been

entr0py says...

I'm convinced Enterprise wouldn't have been canceled if it weren't on UPN. Back in the TNG and DS9 days the shows were syndicated, and they did great. Even the devoted fans who looked up when and where to view it, on a channel they'd never otherwise watch, often couldn't see it because it was on some crappy UHF station. Now that Paramount's experiment with running a TV station has failed, I don't know why they don't greenlight another syndicated series.

Also, yes, horrible music.

Buckingham Palace Guard play themes from 4 Star Trek series

RadHazG says...

Correction Arvana - It's 4 themes total. I don't believe the last 15sec or so is an actual theme just a tie up of the overall feel of each.
Star Trek : Original Series, Star Trek : Deep Space 9, Star Trek : Voyager, last one is Star Trek : The Next Generation

I was somewhat embarrassed to realize I recognized each of them within 2sec of the opening notes. But then ST:OS is all over the place, ST:DS9 is probably my favorite theme (if not show) and ST:Voy was probably almost my favorite series just barely under ST:TNG.

These gentlemen do a massive credit to the themes, played just beautifully. Also, I'm about 80% convinced that a large part of the reason ST:Enterprise failed so miserably (besides the show itself) is that it was the first series to step away from the grand brass orchestral opening and instead went with that piss ant contemporary music crap. How can you feel as if your actually in ST or about to set off on a grand adventure with THAT crap as the start? Go listen to the ST:Enterprise theme after this and see if you aren't immediately turned off to the series just based on the opening theme alone.

BSG is a clusterfuck of gratuitous violence, unrealistically evil characters, and woo-woo nonsense. Interesting, yes. But it is utterly incoherent. Brother Cavil is an even less realistic character than Lord Voldemort. Most of the characters in BSG are fucking insane.

If I had to rank the Star Trek series:
1. DS9 seasons 1-6 and TNG seasons 2-7
2. DS9 season 7
3. Voyager
4. TNG season 1
5. TOS and Enterprise

Prequels are almost always bad because knowing the future in too much detail kills creativity.

DS9 is #1. Love it.
Enterprise has Jolene Blalock...so it can't be worse than Voyager.
BTW, Jolene was in House last week, but just a bit part

That said, one of the big victories of TNG was the SF plots w/o the tawdry sex. The five seasons of Andromeda managed a few episodes of that too.

I have not seen the complete package - all series that is.

I've only watched the complete TNG, Voyager and Enterprise. I've not watched anything of DS9 and only a few episodes of TOS.

Voyager had some annoying elements, Janeway was incredibly annoying to me and Chakotay with all his "spirituality", neo-indian, "honor his spirit" yadda yadda made me want to cut him and leave him bleeding in a ditch. It did also have some elements that I liked. The doctor was great, reminded me of Frasier, 7of9 and Kez. Maybe something more, but nothing that really stands out to me. Oh, Q obviously, who is just awesomeness in general (better with Picard too though).

TOS is just waay to campy to me. It's too much bravado and too little explorers. The old movies were better than the series, I think.

Enterprise sort of broke with the formula, I think. There was a lot of potential in it, but in the end it sort of fell flat. I liked the theme song, even though it didn't feel like star trek at all, and I cringed a little bit when they sang "I have faith of the heart" since all star trek's are pretty hard atheistic shows.

I completely disagree with that list. Here's mine:

1. Voyager
2. DS9
3. TNG
4. TOS
5. TOS cartoon
6. Priceline Commercial with Shatner
7. Enterprise

Voyager was rad. Janeway was rad. 7of9 as a character did improve vastly after her introduction.

Yeah, T'Pol's whole presence there was pretty blatantly for sex-appeal, though towards the end of the show her character started to get a lot more interesting (unlike the other Star Trek sex-appeal character, Seven of Nine, who was a shitty character from her first episode to her last). If I had to rank the Star Trek shows, it would look something like this:

1. TNG
2. DS9
3. TOS
4. Enterprise
5. Voyager

A Look at Healthcare Around the World - NY Times Op-Ed (Blog Entry by JiggaJonson)

imstellar28 says...

What you really mean when you say "I believe everyone should have access to equal healthcare" is that you want someone else to cure your disease. You want someone to pay for your X-rays, someone to extend your lifespan. "Equal healthcare," as you are describing, means we both walk in with a disease and we both walk out without it. It means we all live to be the same age regardless of our condition or lifestyle.

Yet you don't care about people with Xeroderma Pigmentosum. Do you even know what it is? Why not? Why aren't you trying to cure it? Why aren't you donating as much money to the Xeroderma Pigmentosum society (http://www.xps.org) as you are to the American Cancer Society (http://www.cancer.org)? Kids with Xeroderma Pigmentosum rarely live past the age of 20.

Xeroderma pigmentosa, for those not in the know, is caused by an autosomal recessive genetic disorder, aka you are born with it. The symptoms are instant and immediate burning and malignant skin cancer upon even brief exposure to sunlight. Yes, you have all the drawbacks of being a vampire and none of the perks - you die if you go outside, even for an hour.

Without genetically modifying your DNA, you cannot cure this disease. This is just one of millions of examples of ways in which people will never be equal. Equality was never about everyone being identical...same height, same DNA, same lifespan, same income, same musical talent, same level of attractiveness...it was about people being treated equally, despite being different.

IMHO, Martin Luther King Jr. would spit on your vision of "equality" and "morality."

You want to make an argument for universal healthcare? You better use logic because you do not have morality or pity on your side.

You are lucky to live in a time where you even have access to a 60 year lifespan or diagnostic X-rays, because as far as I can tell, you haven't done a single thing to enable either. You think human progress is allocated by the government, 2.5% at a time? How many millions of people suffered through all types of diseases, plagues, wars, long hours, deprived social lives, rocky marriages, and short lifespans to create the technologies you are not only demanding as "rights" but complaining about the cost there of?

You resent those who inherit the fortunes of their fathers, yet you yourself have inherited the wealth of all of humanity - language, mathematics, engineering, art, music, literature, agriculture, architecture, and all the lessons of history - a sum far greater than any pile of gold. You are living your entire life off of the sweat, blood, and tears of your ancestors - and you have the gall to complain about what you've been given?

The billions of people who died before you weren't nearly as lucky, and I bet they didn't complain half as much.

I think it's an improvement.. plus, just ask any DS9 fans.. those are close enough to trill spots for me, nomesayin?

everybody winner today

ps. as been observed, no tattoo artist who works in a shop would do this and risk everything... and then talk about it on the news. he clearly has a picture of her, AWAKE, POSED, with the tattoos. Not looking mad, either.

then again, tattooing is the kind of skill you can take with you on the lam.
