Crunchgear review of Dyson Air Multiplier

Stormsinger says...

So -this- is what Dyson was spamming me about. They sent a link to some BS video clip of people going "what is that?" and "Cool!" All with not a word or view of the object itself. Apparently they plan to unveil it Oct 15th. Personally, I can't stand these "buzz" type ad campaigns.

Given the wondrousness of my Dyson vacuum, I'm willing to wager that they've got some really creative process here...they -are- masters of vortexes, after all. I'd also guess that it's going to be hella expensive.

Obama Backs RIAA with $150,000 Per Track Punishment (Worldaffairs Talk Post)

NetRunner says...

^ Actually, I think the open source movement undercuts the whole idea of "only private industry could have created <X>." I'd go so far as to say it's a proof positive that a form of socialism can provide tremendous results, and at the same time provide many aspects that libertarians find appealing (ability to customize for very niche sets of needs and desires, for example).

I don't think it undercuts the idea that people who create works of knowledge like programmers, musicians, and artists have a right to own their creations, simply because they can be cheaply and effectively duplicated. To follow that reasoning, as a banker it's okay for me to steal from you, because it's easy for me to just modify your balance to zero, and I'm doing it with my own private pen and paper (or more accurately, my accounting mainframe).

I do think there are real challenges ahead, because it does seem like intellectual property law is fighting an ultimately losing battle. I think severing the property aspect of that creative process really would cut back on the quality of our art, culture, and equally important, our engineering.

A world in which the true creative class does not get to reap the rewards of their labors, but where "investors", "executives", and "publishers" get the lion's share seems to have things exactly backwards.

I don't like what RIAA does, and on a gut level I agree that "information wants to be free", I just don't know that it should be free, so long as we're organized under a system based largely on personal property.

Under your previously stated definitions of wealth and work, I create neither, and except for when I was young, I never have. I've always worked in some sort of idea-making role, and while I earn a comfortable living doing so, my creations are largely making other people rich.

I think a lot of this has to do with the disrespect for intellectual property; companies shouldn't be able to say "everything you create while working for us belongs to us alone" -- that is much closer to slavery than taxation ever has been.

TED 2009 - A Different Way To Think About Creative Genius

HadouKen24 says...

She's not just saying that believing in an external genius is a useful trick. She's saying that's what the creative process feels like, and embracing that feeling helps the creative process go smoother.

Sounds to me as if, for the purpose of creative work, the creative genius might as well exist.

C H A O S T H E O R Y

/// About the intro:

Apparently we finished another 64k...
...Except that ALL of us are extremely satisfied with it.
(Then again there's probably always a first time.)

Hard to believe that all it took to have an intro that's fun
to make and enjoyable to watch (for us) was around +50 BPM.
Sorry for no deep emotions or touching scene poetry this time;
we thought it was time to do something else.
Interestingly, losing BP06 and breaking the winning streak
helped the creative process immensely - freedom is AWESOME.

We're apparently going against (among others) Farbrausch, Fairlight,
and Kewlers in the 64k compo. Hard to say what chances do
we have, but one thing's for sure: we're really really happy
with our intro already, so from this point it can only get better.

We'd like to thank everyone who supported us during our harder times,
we hope a lot of you will enjoy this intro even if it's not something
you would expect from us. (Cue catchphrase here.)

Many thanks go to ryg of farbrausch for kkrunchy, and the Opera
guys at Assembly'06 for lending us a computer to enter the
intro. Also, greetings to everyone who didn't fit into the intro
greets.

Enjoy the intro as much as we did.

What are you reading? (Books Talk Post)

Ron Paul Denies Theory of Evolution

Phooz says...

I think of evolution more as adaptation than anything else.

In the bible it says God created us from the dust of the earth. I think that whole creative process (dividing cells, natural selection, etc.) could have taken a while, you know, more than the fundamentalistic "one day".

Quentin Tarantino interviewed on Charlie Rose (10/10/2003)

Mitchell and Webb: Writer meets publisher

9058 says...

Gotta love the creative process and how its castrated right at the door leaving some confused mess of strangeness that people dont understand so they say "wow that was interesting, how creative". Interesting doesnt mean creative, just because you dont know what the hell they are selling you doesnt mean its deep, but if it makes a buck then so be it

Future Sound of London - My Kingdom (SURREAL)

oblio70 says...

Your refined tastes, farhad, are much to my liking. "My Kingdom" evokes much of a little visited cerebral-space. Ever conscious, ever mindful, it touches something of the creative process, or at least fueled much of my design hours.

Bill Maher's "A Farewell to Douchebags" 2006

Krupo says...

It's a general theme at the Sift. You also can't (*)Promote or (*)Save your own sifted posts either.

Our strict rule functions as an "extra filter" step in submitting content. To get into the VS queue, we want you to find something that's not already "your baby" in the sense that you've created or recorded it off TV.

We treat the upload to the vid step as part of the creative process since there's usually some measure of an edit involved - for rare exceptions contact the admins first to get clearance.

There's more than enough material available online to obviate the need to sift your own uploads.

Hope that clears up the logic for you.

Revver Videos (Sift Talk Post)

winkler1 says...

I'm not in advertising/marketing, but I bet Revver can deliver the net-centric 25-40 audience that advertisers drool over. Who needs a TV when you've got the Sift?

What's cool about Revver is that it's a business model for folks like Ask A Ninja and Ze Frank to get a cut of the action. They can host and brand their own sites, and make them a destination. Ze Frank has a prominent notice to not post his stuff on YouTube.

Revver gives producers an alternative to posting on YouTube. Or, worse, have ebaum steal their stuff.

So, this may be a way for self-publishing to be profitable. The Ninja podcast is back up where they talk about their creative process and some business issues.. how they interact with their audience via social networks, plans to create DVD's. Viva la Evolution!

(I have no involvement with Revver, except as a fan of shows hosted there.)
