Godless Billboard Moved After Threats

nanrod says...

>> ^Winstonfield_Pennypacker:
Aren't atheists always the ones saying that there shouldn't be public displays of belief - and that anything that even HINTS at a person's belief system is 'insensitive' and 'inappropriate'?

Ummmm No.

Atheists are the ones saying that there shouldn't be displays of religious beliefs on public property like courthouses, schools, libraries gov't buildings. There's a big difference. If you want to shove your religion in my face by paying for a billboard or sticking a Jesus is Lord bumper sticker on your car, feel free. But don't hang the ten commandments on the courthouse wall (especially if you can't even name them)

The Militarization of the Police Force

EndAll says...

>> ^maximillian:
For the 2-4th posters... you don't seem to get it. This has been happening way before Obama and way before 9/11.
I am all for the police employing protection so when confronting a hostile perp. they themselves don't get hurt. However, the police are actively inflating people's anger. Besides what was presented in the video, consider:
- increased use of tasers on people that don't pose a threat. Some even results in death.
- free speech zones
- What just happened in Pittsburgh
- The DHS insistence that they can search anyone without a warrant within 100 miles of any border (check out their website for more info). This would make over half of all Americans not subject to constitutional protection
- Constant police intimidation for simply try to exercise one's first amendment right.
- Police involvement in protect events in LA and Seattle in recent years. There is a trend to use the police force is often used to oppress opposing political views.
- TSA's police state in airports.
- and the list goes on..
Basically, this is about control and subjugation of the American people by the American government. It's the governments wet dream. And, unless we stand up it's only going to get worse.
This government needs to undertsand that this is not welcome, and it's un-American. Crap, we just lost the 2016 Olympic bid for Chicago because of concerns of abusive airport security for foreigners. Way to go DHS!

Don't forget the DHS's own report on domestic terrorism - which singles out "right wing extremists" and "right wing terrorists" as the biggest threat to national security today. If you have a Ron Paul bumper sticker, watch out:

"The report warned law enforcement agencies to watch for suspicious individuals who may have bumper stickers for third-party political candidates such as Ron Paul, Bob Barr and Chuck Baldwin."

Or if you're a returning vet - it's likely you'll end up becoming a domestic terrorist, too!

"Returning veterans possess combat skills and experience that are attractive to right-wing extremists," it says. "DHS/I&A is concerned that right-wing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize veterans in order to boost their violent capacities."

The myth of violent, war-crazed veterans coming home and wanting to keep killing is exactly that, a myth.

TDS 4/7/09: Baracknophobia - Obey

Darkhand says...

Is anyone actually scared of Fox News and Glenn Beck? I don't want to sound like an alarmist but I'm actually beginning to feel that way. A bunch of angry and armed people kind of frightens me.

I dunno I just feel happy I don't have any Obama Bumper Stickers right now. I have a bad feeling it won't be long before people start shooting people for something like that.

Socialism: An Economic and Sociological Analysis (Science Talk Post)

drattus says...

Personally I agree with what DFT and Ornthoron suggest, the labels themselves are more the problem than either socialism or capitalism in themselves is. We, and most other nations, have always had aspects that were socialist, capitalist, and a few other things such as authoritarian besides at times or in places. The difference tends to be in degree, what policies or areas they are applied in and to what extent. Extremes of any in the wrong places can get pretty ugly, the trick is more in finding the right balance between them. We're just so used to sound bite politics and easy two minute answers that we forgot real problem solving involves a bit more time, effort, and judgment than that. That's the thinking that got us into this problem and it won't get us out.

Drug war, war on terror, finances, and so on, it's all the same. We want easy one step bumper sticker answers and real life just won't cooperate with us on that. What we need are intelligent processes that keep all options open and adjust as needed based on current conditions and past results. I hold little hope of us actually getting it though. It won't happen just because it should and the American people for the most part can't be bothered to get involved in their own lives and nation, they'd rather watch reality TV. If we want better we've got to make it happen and I don't think we will.

I don't think that at all! In fact, what I think is that you are at heart a sweet and caring person. I aspire to feel as you do about relationships. A positive outlook is a rare and precious thing and I applaud your efforts.

[It's been aired lately that I am a grudge holder and that is honestly my worst characteristic. I can't let go of the past. Maybe one day I'll make do and fogrive my father and all the people who I feel have "wronged" me. I'm painfully aware of my faults. It's food for thought, thanks swampgirl.]

Bumper sticker, that's a good one.  Of course I'm generalizing.. you guys don't have to sum me up as nieve because I try to keep a positive outlook.  It's choice is all.  Of course I'm not going to keep taking punishment from a toxic personality.  I of course will ditch them in a heartbeat.  But if that person makes a turn around, I have no problem forgetting the past.As for Choggie.  No, he is done here. He's said so.

Life's too complex for relationships to be run via bumper-sticker-sized rules. Some people should be run from, some people should be ignored, some people deserve a second chance, and some people don't. Transgressions, toxicity, and tenacity vary.

I recently had a friend from high school get back in touch and I was kind of pleased, but it didn't take much before I remembered why we lost touch in the first place. I will continue to send one-line, friendly but unenthusiastic replies until she calms down and leaves me alone again.

This isn't the rule: in the same month I found two other people from days past who have vastly enriched my life and who I was delighted to find. I've even had people that I wrote off, justifiably, by my lights, come back into my life and have it be the right thing to let them do so (hell--I even paid for part of rehab for them).

And I know, Swampgirl just wanted to remind people to have an open heart and a little tolerance, and yay for that, but a few other people just wanted to remind people that if yer gettin' kicked, you don't need to keep putin' up with it, and yay for that.
