Ken Burns History of Jazz 1 - Gumbo (Begginings to 1917)
>> ^mauz15:
As a jazz noob, it would be nice if someone with experience could tell me the quality of this documentary. Ken burns is good at documentaries, but does he know enough about jazz? I find the series interesting, but have my doubts.
The first couple of episodes are quite good, and give a decent overview of the beginnings of jazz. But as it gets closer to the end of the series, he gets bogged down in conservatism, and gives a quite reactionary view of modern jazz. The problem is that it depends too much on the interviews with Wynton Marsalis. It would have been better with some more diversity among the sources.
Chartbeat slows things down (Sift Talk Post)
Mine bogs on ping.chartbeat.com every time it is slow.
How to use Excel's VLOOKUP function like a rockstar
^ Agreed
I've seen Slash using that F4 trick.
Bono is really good at charts and pivot tables, but gets bogged down by long embedded formulae so he does a calculation in stages and just hides the columns.
Although the real master of the HLOOKUP is of course Bruce Springsteen who really knows how to work his functions. There's nothing quite like gathering round his cubicle and watching the boss at work.
Particle physicist Brian Cox - Do You Know What Time It Is?
The last line of this describes the universal aspect of time...we don't even really know what that is. All we have when we talk about time is our phenomenological understanding of it, time, in fact, could just be a perception of our mind and nothing else...but it could also be some real force or energy out there. We don't really know, and may never. This could be one of those mysteries veiled in the cloak of the meta rules of the universe. This was a REALLY well done video and recommended for all. It doesn't get bogged down in terminology, but still manages dives deep into the issue.
Something That Worries Me About Videosift... (Cinema Talk Post)
EEEERRRRrrryow! It's Hobble! Tch! The last thing *I* want to be doing, is correcting a bunch of you inside this labyrinth, hmmph. Especially if we ever make it to the Bog of Eternal Stench....
(looks around)
...oops, wrong movie.
Norwegian kid banned from PS3 - drama ensues
Thanks to his parents, this kid is going to grow up to be the next 12 inch spike wearing banshee vocalist fronting a band of zombie vikings raised from the dead wreaking deathly noisy havoc amongst all the blood-stained cave dwellers in the bog.
Feature Request: Feature Request System (Sift Talk Post)
There already is a feature request section (sort of) -- it's called Sift Talk. I know a lot of people like to post random articles here and stuff like that, but technically the main Sift Talk page is supposed to be reserved for Sift-related business. It shouldn't be too difficult for dag and lucky to spot requests, assuming the main page isn't too bogged down with random junk.
Fox News Proves Sarah Palin Is Dumber Than Bush
She's 44...and she has to be tutored? Just more proof that O'Reilly's logic is so skewed, he can't even look at things objectively.
And yet 30 seconds later, he siding with her on "not wanting to be bogged down with a lesson before Couric talked to her". WTF?
Bill O'Reilly is nothing more than a Jim Jones or Marshall Applewhite, "leading" his flock on to greener pastures by kowtowing to their own deluded reality. And he does it knowingly. He reminds me of Burke in 'Aliens': "Well, at least I don't see them fucking each over for a percentage..."
Christopher Hitchens:Religious Morality (53sec.)
What about humankind's scientific output over the lifespan of the universe? I'm confident it wouldn't take that long for a fully secular society to exceed the potential of our current bog of confusion. We'll have to cut loose the deadweight eventually, and the longer we leave it the more damage they do.
What would killing 50 criminals achieve? Exactly that, it's an end in itself, but it doesn't have to be the only end. We could win a culture war if only we could agree that it needs to be fought.
Rachel Maddow - Iraq Plan B
Russia is quite happy that our troops are bogged down in the desert conflicts. I doubt they would veto an extension in the UN.
Heretic 1.3 Walkthrough - Episode 1 Map 1 (E1M1) - The Docks
I remember when co-op was bog standard gaming
My question to atheists: Why fruit? (Science Talk Post)
I'm no scientist by any means, but if I can throw in here, I believe that evolution is tied directly to geography and the surrounding environment. Which is why you have cranberry bogs which thrive in the northeast/west, as opposed to oranges and grapefruits which are more pervasive in southern climates. The "tidal" forces of each region determined the evolution of said fruit, i.e., weather, soil, wind patterns, rainfall, etc, etc. Every variable you can think of is what helped (and continues to help) that particular fruit evolve into its current (and future) state. Which is also why you don't find raspberry brambles growing naturally in southern Texas or pumpkins in northern Idaho.

Zero Punctuation Review: Alone in the Dark
Oh, and almost half this video is a *commercial, so I most certainly will invoke the channel name. The first commercial is... dramatic - EVE? Yup! I don't want to get bogged down in that... but I DO certainly want to get back into Galactic Cvilizations now that they mention it. What's the 7:30 ad? Another escapist cartoon that looks like a cheese rip off of robot chicken?
IQ Disparity with Brian Cox
That was great... I've been on both sides of this type of conversation over the years and I can really feel for the frustration on both sides.
Sometimes, you ask the wrong questions and get bogged down, or resist accepting the answer because of your frustration. Then later on it just occurs to you "Oh... it's XYZ... Of course...". But try to explain your epiphany to someone else, and you can still spin your wheels even though it's now so clear to you.
