I didn't know there was a strict definition. I asked a question and pondered some answers. Oh no! There world is ending. Why do you have to be a continual callow fool about such things? Shotguns aren't rifles? No shit Sherlock. It was an example of where semi-automatic is better. Semi-automatics are better than pump guns. You're dreaming if you think they're even in the same league. Duck hunting is better with a semi-automatic.

The only person who said anything about "Indiscriminately pumping animals, even nuisance animals full of lead" is you. I don't know where you learned to hunt but I learned one shot one kill. And a semi-automatic makes this more efficient (and if you do need a backup shot it comes very quickly). Most pest animals are left to rot. It's too much trouble picking up the carcasses (and often legislated that you must leave them where they drop). If you don't know how to hunt then leave it to the people who do, please (it's so easy to turn your words around).

Trapping, baiting, etc. are others methods that work well in varying circumstances.

Choosing a pump gun over a semi-auto is a beginners mistake. The spread of buckshot or home defense rounds at close quarters is fairly low and you must always aim your firearm properly. In a home defense situation, anyone who is relying on the spread of shotgun pellets to hit their target is a terrible marksman and should consider getting some lessons. You get the same loading sound from a semi-automatic when you let the bolt go forward. I don't know of any data to support the notion that the loading sound scares people away. It has some merit though.

Now, as usual for me I'll be busy for the next 4 months (back at work this morning - I shouldn't even be replying to this but I thought - "hey, I've gotta throw a dog a bone"). Beginners are the best partners because they don't know what's coming or which way to go. They react naturally to pressure or losing balance. Your technique either works or it doesn't.

An experienced partner can make bad technique look good. A beginner will reveal every flaw in your movement.

In general, when training with a beginner, much less force is applied to avoid harming them.

It’s kinda hard to demo this stuff with people who can’t “receive” the technique safely.

I took fencing in college, and had some preconceived ideas about men probably being better at it on average due to higher strength on average.

At least for foil fencing, that turned out to be quite wrong. With foils, strength is far less important than dexterity and footwork skill, which in my class the girls tended to be noticeably better at.

...However, aggressiveness / competitiveness / "killer instinct" was in many ways more important than either strength OR dexterity, and the males tended to exhibit those qualities far more than the females in my class. So even though the women were more technically proficient, the men tended to win matches at a much higher rate.

I found that interesting. Can't say that my experiences would speak to any sort of universal trend, but it was the clear trend in my beginner's level course.

Just for the record.... the snowboarder shouldn't have ridden that line. Sure, he had an ABS backpack... great, but he didn't read the terrain.

As easy as it is to criticise in hindsight there were plenty of signs that he should have read (recent natural avalanche activity, convex rollover, the Avalanche Canada report) that should have said "stay away".

I'm not trying to make myself sound smarter than this guy. I still consider myself very much a beginner in the backcountry, so I take as much care as possible, including knowing and trusting the guys I ride with.

Bottom line: you should be looking for reasons NOT to go.

I'm assuming the boarder is a near complete beginner, because that was a pretty gentle slope and he really should have been able to stop.

That said, I think everyone I know (skiers included) has done something like that. I personally took out an instructor AND her student on my 2nd day boarding Had to ride away as quickly as I could so she couldn't take my pass!!!
