The Science of Anti-Vaccination

Megyn Kelly on Fox: "Some things do require Big Brother"

Penn & Teller pointed it out

Also, @blahpooks comment has a great article that points out the central flaw in all the arguments, that autism is assumed to be worse than measles.

EDIT: it's odd to me that no one points out that, even if the autism link was true (it's not) the worst case scenarios ever put forth would put far fewer children somewhere on the autism spectrum due to vaccine complications compared to measles caused severe brain damage from encephalitis, making it a no brainer even if there was a link.

Oops, I re-read and I was wrong, 1-2% get (and die from) the Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, ONLY about 1/500 (.2% +-) die as a DIRECT result of measles, but far more die from pneumonia or other complications, complications which >1/3 of those infected have. That's WAY more than die from complications from vaccinations, and almost no one dies as a direct result of vaccines.

Thanks, I couldn't find the CDC's numbers. The fatality rate I was seeing elsewhere was a few hundred dead for the ~3-5M likely infections (compared to the ~500k reported ones).

Megyn Kelly on Fox: "Some things do require Big Brother"

lantern53 says...

Not that long ago both Hillary and Obama were against vaccinations because they thought it contributed to autism.

Unfortunately there is no vaccination for what ails them.

Megyn Kelly on Fox: "Some things do require Big Brother"

direpickle says...

The first link is about China. Do they use the same vaccination schedule as we do? Do they use the same vaccine? How good is their record-keeping? Were there 1000 randomly sampled people from all over China, or from one specific place in the province?

They furthermore only mention that that one province has the mandatory vaccinations. Do the others? Are there a lot of unvaccinated people coming through the area that could disrupt the herd immunity effect? Like, say, a few tens of unvaccinated people at Disney?

The second link is someone trying to sell a DVD. There is absolutely no information there, just claims that have been refuted to the end of the universe and back. And some fearmongery correlation/causation conflation. Did you know that the Internet was getting built up at the same time as the skyrocketing Autism rate? I bet the Internet causes autism.

Third link: It is entirely believable that RIGHT NOW the measles vaccine causes more complications than the measles does. Because there are only a couple hundred cases of the measles in the US per year. It is all but eradicated, because of the vaccine, which means that it kills very few people.

If you go back before the vaccine, though, around 500,000 people had the measles a year (and this is probably a low guess, per the link). Around 20% of those had to be hospitalized. About four times more people died from it than now have fatal complications due to the vaccine.

No vaccine: (Possibly much) more than 500,000 people sick. 100,000 people hospitalized. 1,000-10,000 brain damaged. A few hundred dead (not a super fatal disease). Thousands more get liver damage, hearing damage, eye damage, other complications.

Vaccine: Assuming we're at a 90% vaccination rate, around 3,500,000 kids vaccinated a year. ~100 dead, per your link. 1000 with dangerously high fever. Deafness/seizure/brain-damage: So rare that a link to the vaccine can not be established. Autism: Completely fabricated and discredited.

This has a good chart comparing the relative danger, for equal numbers infected/vaccinated. If we stopped vaccinating, it would not take long to get back to where dealing with the measles was a dangerous rite of passage for almost every kid.

Why is China Having Measles Outbreaks When 99% Are Vaccinated?

How Vaccines Harm Child Development

Measles vaccines kill more people than measles, CDC data proves

You can do better.

Megyn Kelly on Fox: "Some things do require Big Brother"

ChaosEngine says...

Do better, eh? No problemo.

China: Try reading the actual study (from your first link).

Conclusion:
A timely two-dose MMR vaccination schedule is recommended, with the first dose at 8 months and the second dose at 18–24 months. An MR vaccination speed-up campaign may be necessary for elder adolescents and young adults, particularly young females.

In other words, what's needed is more vaccination.

How Vaccines Harm Child Development: They don't.
First, the article is by Russell Blaylock, who believes "he former Soviet Union tried to spread collectivism by covertly introducing illegal drugs and various sexually transmitted diseases into the United States." He also hangs out with Alex Jones and Pat Robertson.
Second, almost everything in it is bullshit. He even falls back on the "vaccines cause autism" bollocks that was never true and had the idiot shill doctor that made it up stripped of his credentials.

Measles vaccines kill more people than measles, CDC data proves
Holy shit, that's terrible. Oh no, wait, it's a complete misrepresentation. No-one died from Measles, BECAUSE THEY WERE VACCINATED AGAINST IT.

Stop getting your medical information from quacks, liars and homeopaths.

Lewis Black - america does not understand teachers

kceaton1 jokingly says...

How'd I literally, "jump-the-shark" memory wise on that one?

Anyway, there must be some sort of causality law in this universe that if your Mom is a schoolteacher, over-worked (due to giving a damn), with crap pay, plus everything else that comes with it make your Mom, like Lewis's and mine raise children who are sarcastic pessimistic frustrated bastards (and liberal as well, do I really need to explain why this is true) and laughing only because the irony of it all...

...Along with the other "fun-issues" I mentioned above, there are also the time honored classics, like: that Elementary & Middle-School teachers must babysit half the kids since their parents (and sometimes it's just the kids...) apparently never figured out to tell their kids, after the many failed parent-teacher conferences, that yelling in class, throwing punches at teachers students, bringing your favorite "x" to show everyone (usually an animal or a weapon), and the epidemic of simply just ignoring the "external" world while in/at a desk/seat...are all wrong.

Sure, some have ADHD and really DO have problems learning the way the majority of us do (same with autism and other issues)--but, if the school is even remotely trying they just might have a special needs class for these kids; or at least resources to help the issue (and to also clue the parents in to the problem if they have no idea it is occurring).

We really need a fresh start on the entirety of the education system; it literally needs a reboot. Especially as you see less and less students going to college every year. There are at least two major issues causing this... It would be a nice setup if we could turn the entire system from the ground up into an apprenticeship and internship type system, with earlier grades built to help you find what you are good at doing AND also what you can excel in and love doing at the same time.

Even extending into college years (and getting rid of all the filter and junk classes), actually give every student at least one ability to utilize. Use colleges and universities to train master's and doctorate (plus other specialized degrees and long-term goals)...

Sorry, I just wanted to rant about my ideological hope for education one day. Can you imagine how impossible this is to do right now... Oh, yeah, class size too should be 15 or lower...

Specifically, what 'references to deficiencies in your character and process' appear clear? I think you're reading into what I wrote, because I didn't mention your character, nor reference a 'process' that I know of (except a thought process of some people that believe disproven theories, like the one that claimed vaccines cause autism. If that's what you mean, be honest and say so clearly please, as you have indicated it is not the reason you are upset and that you have no clear position either way, leaving me with no explanation whatsoever).
I did re-read my post and response and can't tell what you're talking about. As I read it, it was a flat disputing of the content of the video, a question about why you found it inappropriate, and a request for clarity about your disjointed responses.
Yours however were clearly disrespectful ad hom attacks ("I have little to no respect to offer." and "I do, however, have a disdain for apparent character deficiencies") without adding to discourse or discussion of the content of the video, only rant about how nasty I am for saying it was BS (a position backed up by facts and data) or asking why you downvoted (apparently inappropriately, as you can't find an answer to "what's inappropriate or offensive")....but I'm the mean nasty guy referencing deficiencies in YOUR character and process? Huh?
I'm also unsure what you mean by "my opinion of you remains intact and as I would prefer it."...as you neglect to mention what that opinion is. The implication is that you have a low opinion of me, because you prefer it that way. Am I missing something?
I again note you have still not answered the original question that set you off, so I'll ask once again....What did you find offensive or inappropriate in my original post that caused you to downvote the comment? I'll add a second question....Why does that question make you apparently so angry and disrespectful? There was obviously something you found worthy of all this angst, but you still have not said what it was. PLEASE be clear and succinct if you care to answer.

chicchorea said:

...it follows then that perhaps I mirror your predicament and do not properly understand your comment. Upon rereading yours I still find it oddly fragmented as you obviously do mine.

However, the references to deficiencies in my character and process appear clear.

I will reread my response and you may do so likewise with yours...or not.

In any case my opinion of you remains intact and as I would prefer it. However, I am always willing to learn.

What? I couldn't make heads or tails of this entire post....or the one that followed.
I noted that it did not answer why you downvoted, or what you found offensive in my previous post that triggered this one. Obviously you found something extremely offensive, but I can't fathom what. I flatly showed that the message from the video was statistically impossible, you seemed to take it personally wrote me this....which I can't follow.
I found my post kind and pleasant, except for people emotionally invested in the silliness that vaccines cause autism (repeatedly proven false, even by the guy who came up with the idea...decades ago). I only showed the ridiculousness of their argument in the video, where their own statistics showed their conclusion is absolutely ridiculous and mis-represented.
What gives? Were you having a bad day or what? I really don't get it.

chicchorea said:

It is with disappointment that I find your comments. ...belittling, condescending, and insulting. After the many comments privately exchanged up to this point that this one is not proffered so is indicative of a lack of respect I can only find interesting and telling.

As to the video, its merits or lack thereof and for the various opinions about same, it may be that in the fullness of time consensus will change...or not. As to my investment in the matter, I presently have none. To knee jerk, in your vernacular, comments or opinions garnered from snippets, headlines, media articles, predilection of personal beliefs, etc,. I have little to no respect to offer.

I do find the subject of this video interesting and have done enough research to find merit in further evaluation and a skeptical eye towards purported findings. But, that is neither here nor there. I posted it primarily for my own archival purposes fully expecting the reaction received with no concern about it. This practice will be repeated exercised if not often so. I will admit surprise at the development precipitating this exchange. Oh well.

I do not need to agree with others, as is often the case, to respect and even like and care for them. I do, however, have a disdain for apparent character deficiencies as is evidenced by behavior. Also, oh well. Neither do I suffer the defect of ego that I must defend a point of view or opinion or engage in any allied exercise of futility and certainly not in this environ as the honored civilized pursuit of intelligent discourse is so oft shunned in favor of banal, insipid and vitriolic attacks.

Enjoy and thank you for the many civil, kind and pleasant exchanges this one notwithstanding, of course.

CDC Whistleblower Admits MMR Vaccine Autism Link

ChaosEngine says...

My expertise is not really scatology in general, but more specifically around bovine fecal detection.

This registers off the scale.

And since you have decided to engage in an Ad Hominem on Gorski rather than refute any of the actual science, I will do the same and ask that if you are going to attack the author rather than the argument, you at least do so using a site that doesn't have Jenny fucking McCarthy as one of it's contributors

Anyway, even if there was a link between autism and vaccination, it would still be the lesser of two evils.

Do it. This isn't science, it's disingenuous propaganda of the worst variety.
Thanks for the link. I now know after reading that I was wrong, even the 'missing' data didn't change the statistics one way or the other when they're included...so no conspiracy, no change in the data, and no problem with black children suddenly all having autism...sorry.

I'm really tempted to remove this from the science channel because there's no science going on here. There is plenty of lies and manufactured controversy though.
