Happy 15th Birthday, VideoSift! (Sift Talk Post)
Happy Birthday, Lads and Lasses. I have lots of memories from here, happy, sad, good, and bad. I always felt the community was what kept Videosift alive for so long and I still do.The lively discussions we used to have were always interesting. I've stepped away from the site the last years, but peek in now and then.
I wish you all well.
Let's talk about Trump's accomplishments...
16) propaganda
17) they should be, most of my american friends are very optimistic about the future right now
18) this is really interesting - basically supports my theory that covid is doing less economic damage than the daily news would suggest
19) and 20) good news for rich people
So what does this say about Trump - he let the economy do its thing, did not start wars and helped rich people.
If he did not have other failings this would not be too bad. But presenting this as something extra is.. uninformed?
I have to say I had an interesting few minutes of reading up on these things and thanks Newt for your insights, and Bob for the initial ideas, I know a number of people who believe this type of propaganda and its always interesting to try to find out what statistic or news article is being misrepresented.
Eugene Bullard, The Black Swallow of Death
The History Guy deserves to be as well-known as Bill Nye. His videos are uniformly excellent and always interesting. He's earned every single one of his subscribers.
Orcas playing with swimmer at Hahei Beach, New Zealand
Humans are always interesting to Orcas after they've eaten a seal.
It makes me wonder why they see humans as interesting but see seals as food.
Smarter Every Day -- Why you put on your oxygen mask first
These things always interest me, because I have such a high form of self health anxiety that I am constantly analyzing myself. I see this, and it is the same with diabetics who are functional but unaware anything is wrong when going into low sugar shock, and I cannot imagine this ever happening to me. If the slightest thing was off, my brain would be all over myself.
I don't drink much because of this, if I get even a little drunk my brain starts spending an enormous amount of concentration to correct for the impairment. Its for the best I guess.
Louis CK Talks To Charlie Rose
I'm always so interested to here just about anything he has to say. Always interesting. *quality
Everything is Terrible -- Just Ask God with Rap
Didn't seem that terrible. Pretty good production value and they weren't doing anything horribly cliche or out of sorts for the 80's.
Was there something that I missed in there? I'm always interested in understanding places that my perspective differs with others.
Don't Stay In School
If you did high school bio, think about what you covered that has any sort of influence on medicine... =)
Frog or rat dissection? Covered that in Bio 101 in the first year of my Applied Chemistry degree (and yes, you can give a rat a Columbian necktie... . Photosynthesis? Mating?
Yeah, Bio was pretty much introducing you to broad concepts and it's nothing that doesn't get rehashed in the first 6 months of Uni via intro subjects. I think of it more as a way to dip the toe in the pool and see if the subject matter excites you enough to try and turn it in to a career.
eg. At 40 now (and having forgotten my chem degree and gone in to IT as a sys admin after working as a chef, bouncer etc), I could go back to uni barely remembering anything about chemistry and start from scratch and be none the worse for it. The keystones you talk about are literacy and numeracy, that's about it. And they are learned in primary school.
Oh sure, it helps if you can do some higher math, but English lit? Physics? Drama? Almost nothing you do at high school has any real defining affect on most of what you do as an adult. It's more like a sampler platter, and of course a way of grading students (on a curve of course, we can't have people's scores based on their own merit) to distinguish what tertiary studies they should be eligible for.
School should be about igniting curiousity as much as practical skills for life. I did "Home Economics" (ie. cooking/sewing/budgets etc) and typing (on real mechanical typewriters no less) as opposed to wood/metal shop ( I was awful at shop). My home ec teacher was always interested in making different food, so we tried some pretty out there things in grade 8 (~13 years old), and I've always been interested in cooking since. Similarly, learning to touch type has made my life radically simpler, particularly in IT (try writing a 40 page instruction manual hunting and pecking).
Most of the high school grads we see as cadets or trainees are essentially useless and have to be taught from scratch anyway. Most of the codified BS we have these days doesn't prepare kids for life, doesn't encourage critical thinking or creativity, it a self justification to keep schools open.
I disagree. You can't show up at Uni at 18 expecting to do medicine without having spent the preceding years learning biology, and probably maths as well. Of course, it's true that this knowledge is eventually eclipsed, but I don't think you can look at the cap stone and dismiss all the stones at the bottom as unnecessary.
Is the Universe a Computer Simulation?
holographic universe, not new but always interesting.

The Best and Worst Movies of 2014 (Cinema Talk Post)
Thanks Sarzy - always interested in your thoughts on film. I'm surprised how many of your top ten I've seen, and enjoyed them all. Will give Interstellar a go when I can find it in a cinema - I confess to believing the negative reviews given how many they were.

There have been one or two vids of Mongolian throat singing posted here, but never performed by a westerner It's always interesting though.
Wow, never heard this type of singing before. http://youtu.be/vC9Qh709gas
Burt Rutan's ARES turbofan "Mudfighter"
Pretty cool. I don't see it being too useful, but it's a very cool plane. It has nothing like the payload of an A-10, so the big question I'd have is what sort of endurance does it have? Given that they're planning on replacing A-10's that can stay on station for hours with F-35's that will only be able to for a matter of minutes, I guess it isn't considered a priority anymore (which could be right... might be better to get there fast, expend your weapons, then leave to rearm and come back fast). And then there are drones, of course, cheaper and with better endurance yet to back that up. Meh.
Anyways, it's always interesting to see the clever designs that never panned out. I wonder what this was developed for. The A-10 was already in service by then, so there is probably an interesting story behind it. Although, at the time I think the A-10 was intended as an anti-tank weapon and it wasn't until later (maybe when this was developed), that they figured out it could be good for close support too.
The Unstoppable Walk to Political Reform
He's always interesting to listen to, but I still can't see any way this can possibly work. It's too easy for the Kochs and Waltons to continue to buy the legislators, even those who have "committed" to his cause. Which means it will have to be done over, and over, and over. While the corporate media and astro-turfed blogosphere pour out a flood of propaganda against it.
It's a nice dream, but that's all it is. The only way to change the path we're on involves rivers of blood, I'm afraid.
Heart - Barracuda Live 1977
True enough, Watching the vintage footage is always interesting. and ya, It's real music from people who could actually play music. That's always the first thing I notice when I see this stuff. It's more about the music and way less about image, at least by today's standards.
These days, it's look good first, play music second.

Do you have any female friends that rarely get catcalled? Ever spoken with them about the women who always complain about how men are always interested in sex?
I know that women find it demeaning. I'm saying that's like being angry you ate too much steak and don't have enough room for dessert. Internet bullying can lead to suicide or severe depression. I find it sick that you (or she) would equate unwanted favorable attention with outright verbal abuse.
I'd suggest talking to as many of your female friends as possible and find out from them whether or not they enjoy being catcalled. You'd be surprised by A) how many of them actually find it demeaning and B) how many of them determine if it's demeaning by what the other person looks like (I won't even go into what this says about them.)
