Trump Is Losing the Shutdown Fight: A Closer Look

RFlagg says...

I don't get how Trump and the GOP say the Democrats need to be willing to negotiate. They are offering $1.6 Billion in additional funding. But Trump is acting like Veruca Salt, and stomping his feet, saying he wants $5.7 Billion, and he wants it now. That's not how negotiations work. You want $5.7, they offer $1.6, you come down to say $4.6, they come back at $2.3, you come back with $4 and permanent residence status for Dreamers, they come back with $3 and permanent resident status, then you meet at $3.5 and permanent resident status. You don't just keep acting like a child throwing a temper tantrum and demanding the $5.7, and if you don't get it, the other side is the one's being unreasonable.

The "Pro-life" party, that loves the death penalty and war, so not really pro-life at all, is now holding millions of Americans (800k, plus their families, plus the millions of people who depend on those services) hostage in an act of economic terrorism, until the other side fully caves into their demands. They are the ones not willing to negotiate, but are doing some 1984 level doublespeak, and blaming it all on the Democrats. And the Fox News types are eating it up, which is probably why Trump thinks he's winning. "Just look. Steve says I'm doing good and that all real Americans support me."

They need to pass a law, that Congress, their aids and staff, the President, their aids and staff, the White House aids and staff... all don't get paid on any shutdown. If they've already given up their salary (I love how Trump followers commend Trump for giving up his salary, while ignoring he makes more a year off the Secret Service than he would in years of salary) then they have to reimburse that salary they would have made in that time. Congress and the President may not take back pay, and it takes a 60% vote to authorize the aids and staff back pay, but only if all other Federal workers also get their back pay first in a separate and prior authorization.

Lol....no you aren't, you admitted you don't get information from news sources, only talking heads and conspiracy cabals....Rush, Dore, and Q to quote you. You're just buying what the propagandists and conspiracy theorists are selling.

That is simply not true. Trump was never a "great nation figure" (whatever that means, I'm guessing you mean great national figure, which is still not true). Trump was a joke in the 90's and 2000's except to those who knew him personally, to them he was an unmitigated douchbag that tried to buy sex from their wives, and late 2000's till now he's been a destructive cancer eating the brain of gullible America, starting in earnest with the birther/Kenyan Muslim nonsense and ramping up from there with meth addict level insanity.
The only thing odd is your complete lack of memory and willingness to let a known liar rewrite what happened 1984 style.

"They Live" had as big an impact on me as "1984" did. What a brilliant movie. And used to have the record for longest fist fight too! OBEY

Sure, bring this up now, only after Roddy Piper is dead.

@bobknight33, this is the kind of greatness you're hoping Trump will return us to, right?

The Unknown Comic - Comic Strip Live 1989

All Transformers Intros 1984 - 2016

SDGundamX says...

The dates for the original series openings are off. For example, they're listing the 3rd version of the original series opening as from 1984 but it showcases both Unicron and Galvetron, who both made their first appearances in the Transformers feature animated film in 1989.

Similarly, the 2nd version of the original series opening (also dated 1984) showcases Omega Supreme, who doesn't show up until Season 2 (1985-1986) in the U.S.

Also, suggesting the lame Gobots had anything to do with Transformers is fucking NERD HERESY (yes, I am aware Hasbro tried to retcon the Gobots as existing in the Transformers universe)!

The Economics of Airline Class

spawnflagger says...

This is the 2nd video where the author got the Concorde story wrong... It became profitable 8 years into service (1984), largely due to BA raising ticket prices and making it more of a luxury. And the Concorde division remained profitable until the crash in France, when they grounded all Concordes while they investigated the root cause. After they started flying again, people were still wary to buy Concorde tickets, and airlines could get more profit out of 1st class tickets on larger, slower planes. So both BA and AF phased them out ~2003.

Jefferson Beauregard Sessions vs Sally Yates (2015 vs 2017)

newtboy says...

Why do I get the feeling that Mr Sessions won't be asking that question to any of Trump's nominees?
Sweet zombie Jesus, we are so fucked. Closer to 1984 every day.
Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos.

Can we start Wexit....the secession of the entire west coast? In today's climate, we might be able to get consent of congress or a constitutional amendment allowing it. The right sees us as troublesome bastard stepchildren as it is, many would be glad to be rid of us libtards, and many of us would be glad to leave.

Welcome To Surveillance Nation

MilkmanDan says...

This, to me, is why Snowden falls 100% into the "hero" box rather than "traitor".

Are there legitimate, beneficial-to-society ways to use surveillance? Sure. Like catching those arson/murderers mentioned in the video. Are there legitimately scary-as-fuck 1984-esque ways to abuse surveillance? Absolutely.

The problem is that we can't decide as a society where the line between acceptable and unacceptable is if we don't know exactly what surveillance is going on and how it is being used. At the very least, I think we need to know enough to be certain that normal legal rights are maintained -- principles like innocence until proven guilty, no ex-post-facto laws/prosecution, and other constitutional protections.

Trump, "Alternative Facts" and the Women's March

newtboy says...

I had to look it up to remember, in 1984 they called it "doublethink" where two contradictory ideas were presented as true, like the ideas they've put forward that they had the largest inauguration crowd ever and the reason they didn't was people had difficulty in getting through security and it was cold.

FlowersInHisHair said:

The phrase is certainly Orwellian, but it doesn't appear in 1984.

Alternative Facts is a term coined by George Orwell in the novel 1984. It Implies that the government makes stuff up and makes it a crime to argue with them.

1984 is now the best-selling book on Amazon. Hmm.
