Primitive Technology: New area starting from scratch

Cassowary attacks

Cassowaries have a reputation in folklore for being dangerous to people and domestic animals. During World War II American and Australian troops stationed in New Guinea were warned to steer clear of them. In his book Living Birds of the World from 1958, ornithologist Ernest Thomas Gilliard wrote:

The inner or second of the three toes is fitted with a long, straight, murderous nail which can sever an arm or eviscerate an abdomen with ease. There are many records of natives being killed by this bird.

This assessment of the danger posed by cassowaries has been repeated in print by authors including Gregory S. Paul (1988) and Jared Diamond (1997). A 2003 historical study of 221 cassowary attacks showed that 150 had been against humans. 75% of these had been from cassowaries that had been fed by people. 71% of the time the bird had chased or charged the victim. 15% of the time they kicked. Of the attacks, 73% involved the birds expecting or snatching food, 5% involved defending natural food sources, 15% involved defending themselves from attack, and 7% involved defending their chicks or eggs. The 150 attacks included only one human death.

The one documented human death was caused by a cassowary on 6 April 1926. 16-year-old Phillip McClean and his brother, aged 13, came across a cassowary on their property and decided to try to kill it by striking it with clubs. The bird kicked the younger boy, who fell and ran away as his older brother struck the bird. The older McClean then tripped and fell to the ground. While he was on the ground the cassowary kicked him in the neck, opening a 1.25 cm (0.49 in) wound which may have severed his jugular vein. The boy died of his injuries shortly afterwards.

Do Not Abandon Your Pet

Fairbs says...

I have a friend whose friend left her 16 year old cat off at the Humane Society (no kill) and I lost a ton of respect for her. Actually I don't feel like I've fully resolved my feelings about it because I don't want to think about it.

I would instantly and permanently abandon any friend or relative who dumped a pet. They deserve nothing less.

It's a Trap

AeroMechanical says...

Yeah, they're doing it wrong again. Something they did or just some nebulous culture shift around ~2000 or so seemed to actually work, and it takes about four or five years before you can know whether what you did worked or not. Prior to the 2000 thing, it was scare tactics, which don't work on invincible teenagers. Then they switched to a less dramatic "it's not a big deal, it's okay to chose not to smoke" approach, which I think was the good one.

The real problem (in the US at least) is the 17 and 18 year-old kids smoking, which means the 13-16 year-old kids do it to be like their older peers. If you can break that cycle, even just once, you come as close to solving the problem as you can. But, since there is this lag time between the beginning of the cycle and it coming full circle, the industry assumes it was the most recent ("evil tobacco corporations taking advantage of you") effort that was actually the effective one. I don't think it is. I especially don't think it will work on college-age demographic they're targeting. It's still "The Man" telling them what to do, even if it's a different hand of "The Man."

"The Political News Media Lost Its Mind"

The US has made the rod for its own back - torture, murder, illegal invasions, nuclear brinkmanship, extra judicial assasinations even of US 16 year olds by killer robot..

The US is about to be China's bitch for a few centuries and you idiots have made sure the ruthless dictators can LAUGH at your protestations of acting better when you had the chance - while your kid is being tortured to death and they laugh at you..

WONDER WOMAN Comic-Con Trailer

Nephelimdream jokingly says...

Also the reason I ask 16 year olds on dates.

I can't wait to be disappointed. Hollywood will once again destroy and skew a character's image to appease the public. Talk to me when Harley Quinn gets the lasso of truth, breaks it's bounds and makes Wonder Woman her bitch. Amazonian queen my ass, this will be just another attempt to get 16 year old girls to drag their sex starved hormone men to shell out money to get laid, and it'll work. At least for the women. This is exactly why I bring my own popcorn bucket to the movies, drill a hole in the bottom, and hope she doesn't ask for extra hot butter.

I went with mom, dad, and my grandmother. We flew to Washington and drove from there.
It was a neat trip, but I expected more from the expo. With a few exceptions, it seemed like it was done on the cheap, compared to what I had seen in old footage. I expected to ride in a hover car, watch hologram movies, ride moving sidewalks, ride monorails, see some early teleportation, etc. Of those, I got a holographic movie, so I was somewhat disappointed. What do you expect from a 16 year old though?

Posted the other 2 videos in the comments of that one. Feel free to sift them if you wish, I won't be posting them for real.

Actually, that video is good quality for a home recording! Hey, post the other parts. Good flashbacks. My family, friends, and I were there too!!

Vancouver - Expo 86 - Part III- GM Holographic Exhibit

newtboy says...

The GM pavilion was by far the most interesting thing at the fair that year...at least to a 16 year old kid (and I'm including the roller coaster). Sadly the footage isn't the best, but the quality of the projection was excellent. The show was an old native American telling stories that came to life in his campfire smoke. It wasn't until the end that he becomes smoke and you realize he wasn't an actor, but was also a projection the entire time. It was amazing, and more than a bit sad that we don't have holographic movies today, seeing as it was clearly possible 30 years ago.
I don't remember much of the rest of the fair. Lots of silly movies and miniatures, a few performances, a couple of rides, and lots of oddly depressing foods. GM definitely won my vote for best exhibit by far.

Teen arrested by 9 cops for jaywalking

Esoog says...

No, he did not get arrested for jaywalking. No, he wasn't slammed to the ground for no reason at all. That description couldn't be more slanted, and is complete BULLSHIT.

The 16 year old didn't comply when asked to do something. He cussed at the cop and told him “Fuck You, I’m not stopping for you,” and continued to struggle and fight.

If he had done what he was supposed to (not walk in the bus lane, and not argue and fight with the cops) then he wouldn't be in that situation.

He's an insubordinate asshole, and that woman needs to STFU and let them do their job. Enough of the slanted bleeding heart bullshit.

$1 to $1,000 Pizza in Times Square

Babymech says...

The $1k pie is just a low-class parody of fine dining - 'let's throw the most expensive shit we can find into a pile and eat it,' which coincidentally is the exact thinking of a monumentally hung over 16-year old with billionaire parents.

Still, I wish these two pizza places existed in my town. Not because I would want to eat at either of them, but because I want to explore the range of options the market would hopefully fill the space between the extremes with. There might be a time, let's say once a year or so, that I want to try a pizza that costs and is worth $50-$60. I kind of wish I had that option.

Also I want a place that serves pizza made from real pokemon.

Two Female Teachers Teach 16-Year-Old Stud How to Threesome

lucky760 says...

I didn't say nor do I think the policy should be that it's permissible for teachers to date students.

Yes, they broke the law. They are criminals. No one's disputing that.

Again, you're beating a dead horse stating the obvious. As I said, of course the woman's children are being hurt by her actions.

I'm not really sure what you're arguing for or against. You seem to be trying to make the case that what they did was wrong and that it's the equivalent of 2 male teachers having group sex with a 16-year-old girl.

I don't think anyone is saying what they did isn't wrong. But no, their actions are definitely not disgusting like it would be with the genders reversed.

Most people (men mainly) are approaching this from the student's point of view. "Man, it would have been awesome to screw a couple of hot teachers when I was in high school." And like always when thinking with the little head, the consequences (such as how wrong the teachers are or how their families will suffer) are an afterthought.

ChaosEngine said:

The point is that there are very good reasons we don't allow teachers to date students even if both are above the age of consent. The teacher is in a position of power over the student and any relationship is inherently exploitative.

As it happens, they are guilty of statuary rape (the student was under the age of consent at the time) so they could be facing jail time.

No actual victims? Tell that to the 3 young kids who might have to visit mom in prison.

World's First $9 Computer

MilkmanDan says...

Anyone remember TI graphing calculators, which at the time I was using them (90s) I think ran on 8088 processors?

Quite a bit MORE expensive than this. MUCH less powerful, even factoring in Moore's law. AND, they were in no way intended to be an open, hackable design like this is. And even with all those limitations, they became one of the primary "introduction to hardware and software hacking" devices of my generation.

When I was a 16-year-old HS Freshman, I had a TI-81 that I hooked up to a PC with a serial port and "hacked" zShell onto. I learned a bit of assembly code and put on lots of little programs like games etc. onto my calculator. I even got an image display program where you could load up bitmap images that were converted to a specific size and color depth (4-8 grays if I remember right). I got busted in my Geometry class that year looking at a blurry grayscale picture of a topless Pamela Anderson. On my calculator. If that doesn't put me in the running for biggest nerd ever, I don't know what would.

Anyway, I can only see this "Chip" thing (I agree that I'm not too big on the name) as a very cool idea. Sometimes, something as simple as a hackable platform or a blurry 4-bit picture of some boobs can be enough to push someone towards a lifelong interest in IT and other technology. Raspberry Pi and the others are great too, but the price of this one gives it a real leg up in the universal accessibility department!

Ex-cops smoke weed

newtboy says...

I'm pleased for you. My experience has differed. I was charged at 16, and again at 18, for minor personal amounts, well under a gram the first time.
I also have had 18 cops surround my car to drag a single meek 90 lb 16 year old kid off to jail for .2 grams of weed in his back pack (about 1 bong hit of dust) in California... and he was in for 4 months (his parents insisted). They had to search SO hard to find anything to get him for, they were obviously intent on taking him. (Oddly, they let me go on my way with 3 bongs, 5 pipes, and 15 empty schnapps bottles in my car....I was 17.)
I've also been ticketed for drawing a 4" long line of sidewalk chalk on a sidewalk. That cost over $200, for using the product as intended in front of my own home.
My brother, on the other hand, had a 16th birthday party with 300 kids and 12 kegs, and my dad hired the Houston police as 'security' to 1.stop drunks from driving away and 2. stop other cops from busting the party (that's how it was done in the 80's, pay them and they look the other way...probably still applies)
It's nice to hear about reasonable cops existing, I just seem to not run into any.

I can remember at least 5 occasions growing up off the top of my head, where that exact thing happened. No charges, just buds ground into the pavement. I was even at a house party once where an officer asked the host to bring me a hammer so as I could smash my own paraphernalia, and again, no charges.
