You mean he broke down when one minute he was excited about his awesome job and the next thousands of people were screaming at him for no reason.

No, I mean, he was adult enough to realise that maybe that shirt didn't send a great message to women in science and because he's not a complete dickhead, he didn't want to be seen as such.
