Top Gear Reviews Tesla, Smokes Lotus Elise Off The Line

Jeremy Clarkeson was blown away as he left the Lotus Elise behind. "God Almighty! I cannot believe this... this car is electric LITERALLY. Not bad for a motor that's the size of a watermelon." (From Digg)

Now if they just didn't break down...

I think this is a setup because they are in the pocket of major auto mfg.

All this "breakdown" non-sense. What the breaks broke while charging?? wut huh? I wonder though without actually racing, but going speedlimit + 10 and super fast acceleration how many miles you get on a charge.

Also I guess that would be British "13Amp" plug so that is at 220V correct? But 16 hrs seems way too long.

Bullshit alarm! The 200 mile range estimate is for normal driving, not pushing the car's limit around a track! Same goes for the engine overheating. Also, the charging time is much less for the electrical unit that gets installed in your garage, which can run off the higher voltage electric lines.

This car is not, and was never meant to be, a track racing vehicle. It is for wealthy, progressively minded individuals who would like an electric vehicle to drive to work without sacrificing performance and looking like a fool in a golf cart.

It is also a fantastic proving ground for technologies that will eventually be used in more affordable cars for the rest of us.

What is so disappointing about this video is that the first half is for the Tesla then the last half is all about destroying it. Same shit they did to Preston Tucker. Also side note Lotus has been producing cars for over 50 years Tesla just produced their first car this year and still beat the Elise. Lost a mild amount of respect for Top Gear.

Why would you lose respect for a review show that clearly expresses a liking for the product they are reviewing but is also willing to describe the flaws they perceive to be attached to it? Surely that's what a review is about?

NobleOnesays...

watching the movie who killed the electric car. battery technology is there but is owned by oil companies go figure. that show was obviously biased and i love how they linked it to a nuclear power plant at the end, even though nuclear power if done right is actual really clean energy. i am sure as well the reviews on preston tucker's torpedo wasn't bias it either.

Fadesays...

I don't understand why you are claiming they are biased. They clearly liked the car. Yes they found problems with it but to not show bias they should not tell us about the problems?

NobleOnesays...

i can see your point but telsa did not come out to build a race car they have no car for the Le Mans. yes i agree they should report on the problems but within reason was there no problems to be suspected from a car that has only been out a year? the show just seemed to slant towards the last half on how horrible this car was and ineffective it was against gas based cars.

Fadesays...

Whether the car is a day old or 20 years old is of no consequence. The car only lasted for 50 miles.. That is BAD!
The didn't build a le mans car, they built a sports car. It is being tested like a sports car, in the same way every sports car is tested on Top Gear. It beat the 911 GT for christ sake!
The car smoked a gas based car, but it was smoked by the fact that it is as reliable as an Irish drunk. I still don't understand why you are so against them describing its failings. It's not like the iphone of cars...it's far from perfect.

NobleOnesays...

i won't disagree with 50 miles being bad but the tesla is an idea or optimistic view of the future. knowing that you can build a beautiful car that is electric. they did build a sports car so in a court of your expectations they our guilty. its failings to me are nothing more then short comings of the true nature which is an independent car company showing the world that electric car can be made and it doesn't look like something "Doc" created that no one would drive.

MaxWildersays...

OMFG! I have now officially lost all respect for that show.

A spokeswoman for the popular motoring show confirmed to Register Hardware - as Tesla's head of spin, Rachel Konrad, recently claimed - throughout the test, the show was never without a working Tesla.

"They never had to push a car off the track because of lack of charge or a fault," Konrad wrote earlier this week. "It’s unclear why they were pushing one into a garage in the video; I’ll refrain from speculating about their motives."

Now we can reveal the answer: according to the Top Gear spokeswoman, the tested Tesla was filmed being pushed into the shed in order to show what would happen if the Roadster had run out of charge.

What complete and utter bullshit and misrepresentation! No wonder that line about the brakes malfunctioning during recharging didn't make sense. It was probably a complete fabrication.

They are apparently pulling these "what if" scenarios fairly often now, so you can't trust a thing they say.
