Senator Boxer: Don't You Know Who You're Talking To?

Barbara Boxer 'worked hard' to earn the title 'Senator', and she wants you to use it.

She's obviously had to deal with this before. Good on her for making that point. People on the stand have to be reminded that they are dealing with officials and that they aren't just shooting the shit.

Why just "Senator"? That isn't her full name. "Senator Barbara Levy Boxer" should be used in every sentence addressed to her... if her original middle name is known then that should be included as well.

You aren't addressing just any Senator "sir", you're addressing Senator Barbara Levy Boxer!

Also, I'm glad she chose not to refer to him by his title. The rank of Brigadier General obviously requires much less work and responsibility than getting elected in California. She could perhaps address him as "you" or "son".

The military always address each other with their title, so why not address a senator correctly.

Eh, no. Speaking from personal experience, they use sir and ma'am as a respectful form of address when having a conversation. They generally use titles when talking about other people. Maybe a little bit, I guess, but it's pretty awkward using a person's full title every three sentences.

Boxer was just in a bitchy mood I guess.

Common practice in the Army is to address higher ranking officers as "sir" or "ma'am" after the beginning of a conversation. I can't really speak for the other branches though.

Things are usually much less formal within individual units too. Often people are addressed simply by their last name unless there is a significant difference in rank (and the higher ranking soldier wants to be a tight-ass about it).
