QI - What's the Biggest Load of Rubbish in the World?

France!

Most of the plastic has broken down into pieces smaller than 5mm across, and it's very diffuse. It's not like there's an actual island of rubbish floating in the Pacific, at its densest you still only find a dozen or so pieces of plastic in a cubic metre of water.

It doesn't sound like a lot, but it's especially bad for creatures like whales that feed by sifting through vast quantities of ocean to get enough food. Small filter feeders like shrimp are also affected, and being at the bottom of the food chain it means the plastic also gets ingested by any animal that eats them.

It's been there for a long while, and it just keeps getting bigger. Ships are actually avoiding it now because it fucks up their motors. You can't find fish in the pacific without some amount of plastic in their stomach.
