One of the Most Exciting Moments in eSports History

EDIT: TubeChop version doesn't seem to work anymore, so here's the original... just need to jump to the right moment, which is about 26:55, or 27:10 if you are really impatient.

This is from Game 2 of the match between iG and Na'Vi (iG won game 1, Na'Vi are the defending champions). Hopefully ques up properly to the 26m55s point... You only need to stick around for the first 2 minutes or so...

For those who don't follow professional gaming, or DOTA 2 specifically... the team that the camera is following is a Chinese team called iG. They are invisible to Na'Vi (a Ukrainian team that one the $1 million last year). The way they are setup and the first attack cast should have spelled the end of Na'Vi.

This is at The International, the grand prize is $1 Million... making up most of the $1.6 million prize pool...
The International is sort of the Super Bowl of DOTA 2. It is the final big matchup of the season. After a couple weeks or so, a new season will begin and there will be other matches with other prize amounts until the next International...
Each major eSport has its own final. League of Legends has their North American finals going on now as well with the final world championship taking starting Oct 13th...

You can watch the crowd and the video at the same time here, just mute one of them... the crowd when it sees iG coming around is very somber, knowing it looks to be the end of Na'Vi... I was lucky enough to be watching it on Twitch live... would have been cooler to see it in person, but still... I was nearly on my feet jumping in excitement at the whole turn of events.

DOTA stands for Defense of the Ancients. It was originally a Warcraft 3 mod that has been remade by Valve into it's own stand alone game, now called DOTA2. It's technically still in Beta despite this being the second year they've had the International tournament with the $1 million prize to the top team.

The team who is winning is "Na Vi". This clip shows their opponent "iG" sweeping around to pull off what is called a "smoke gank" and which they seem to have set up perfectly. However one character on Na Vi's team is able to use one of his abilities to disable most of the other team giving his teammate time to steal a key ability from the other team and turn around a fight that should have been devastating.

It's a little hard to explain and even harder to tell what is going on if you don't know anything about the game. But what you should know is that it was an amazing turn around at a crucial moment on one of esports' biggest stages. It would be kinda like intercepting a touchdown pass from your opponent to then run it back for your own score in American football. Perhaps something like one or two goals in stoppage time to comeback and win a football(soccer) game.

This post has gone on far too long, check out Dota2 if you're interested in finding an excellent team oriented PC online game.

Follow the DOTA 2 tag then watch the All Your History DOTA videos (there are 3)... then perhaps the Comical View (which is funnier if you got the basic understanding). DOTA 2 is free to play, but in closed beta at the moment. Getting a key though is mostly a matter of applying and waiting, and/or visiting Twitch streams of the game or Steam trade forums. At the point in this video iG wassort of winning, but Na'Vi turned it around with what SWBStX talked about...

>> ^doogle:

I'm curious to know more, but have immense difficulty with the limited info here.
What's "DOTA"?
Who the fuck is winning?
bla bla bla

That was a great analogy there... the interception and running for a touchdown in American football (I don't know football/soccer well enough to know on the other ).

I've yet to actually play a game against real people... even Easy bots beat me. I think I am nearly at the stage I could have some coaching, but not sure yet... then again I worry I may be learning bad techniques and will have to unlearn what I have learned. Right now I am focusing on last hits and denies (for those that don't know DOTA/MOBA style games, each lane generates minions called creeps, and by getting the last hit on the enemy creeps you gain more experience and gold than you would otherwise, your creeps or towers are often getting last hits, since it is worth xp/gold to last hit a creep, you want to deny the enemy team that ability and so you last hit your own creep, they still get some XP/gold, but not as much, and XP/gold becomes more important as the game goes on). Then perhaps items/abilities and all the heroes... it really starts to get intimidating with the depth.

Thanks @RFlagg, but I still don't understand wtf is going on.

Thanks for not making it easier for me to understand. I hope you get as many views as there are people cheering in the video. What's happening in the video? whotf cares! People who don't know what is going on can go f* themselves!

To help those who don't know what DOTA is, rather than just say follow the DOTA 2 tag, we can now link to the *related=http://videosift.com/video/All-Your-History-DOTA-Part-1-The-Pebble-that-Started which is the All Your History video (part 1, parts 2 and 3 are linked in the comments).

Shame Dota is so impenetrable to spectators that haven't played the game. I imagine a lot of the excitement from this clip needs context beyond even the simple mechanics of the game. I've mostly stopped playing Dota now but its such an enjoyable game to watch atm. Great casters/production, lots of prize money and teams with a lot of character. Winning formula.

I was screaming like a girl when I watched it live. Unashamed Navi fanboy here. I think this was more misplay by iG though, and some smart drafting by Navi. They consistently gave away Siren knowing that as long as they could get Enigma or Tide the Song was as much a set-up for them as it was for their opponents. Dendi's Rubick play in that tournament was the standout for me. Stealing Ravage after Ravage was amazing to watch. Nice to see Enigma getting some more play again recently now that Magnus fell out of the pool a little. Isn't anything quite as hype as 3/4/5 man Black Hole.

In the interest of helping I'll try a brief explanation of game simplified as far as I can.

DOTA 2 and games like it have you controlling a single hero character much like in Diablo or any of it's derivatives. You play it as teams against one another, with the goal in essence being to destroy your opponents base. Each team starts out with half the map, and has defensive structures(towers) on their side that attack anything near them. Finally, there are typically several paths from between bases along which AI controlled waves of units are sent from each of your bases. Killing the AI units, enemy heros, and towers all gain you experience and money that you can spend on upgrades of various sorts.
