Norwegian army driving armoured vehicle using Oculus Rift

Teknisk Ukeblad: The Norwegian Army is now trying Oculus Rift gaming glasses in Norwegian armoured vehicles.

The effect can best be described as sitting in a transparent vehicle.

Teknisk Ukeblad got to try out an early development version at the Rena test field with a prototype of Oculus Rift and the specially developed camera system.

With cameras positioned on both sides of the vehicle and the special glasses, the tank operators have a 360 degree view from the driver‘s seat, even with the hatches battened down.

Thats a huge advantage. I hope the gunner and commander also use it.
That would change tank warfare completely.

Hmm, for ingenious I think we need to think more like UAV..... so.... the dude is in the tank.... why? Impossible to control from a trailer 20 miles away?

Awesome. And ingenious.

You could then also incorporate a rear-facing driver's seat for less frontal impact injuries. Then we would be one step close to Captain Scarlet's SPV.

I wish this video had more actual footage from the system, showing what it would be like to use the system to look around the vehicle.
