hmm, I don't imagine there are too many instances in which someone can be assured of getting through life without ever being told that everything they believe is probably shit....but this is certainly one of them!

Any god who plans shit like that is a cruel bastard.
nobody would accept civic planning that had freeways dumping into the ocean and call it "part of a larger, perfect plan". God is the ultimate in abusive relationships. "He only makes me suffer cuz he loves me".

That aside, it's great that this guy is able to get on and live his life to the fullest.

Hey, wow, I've actually met Nick in real life. In fact, I spoke with him a little over a week ago. Very nice guy, and pretty smart too. Surprising that this clip would make it on VS.

In any case, for those who think that religion was some sort of detriment to him, do note that he was suicidal at one point in his life. Yet now he does a lot of charity work for others who are disabled. Without religion, would his life have had such a positive outcome?

Sylvester you are saying you should lie to sumone becuse i might make there life better if thay belive it . anny way im sure if he had a good understanding of real philosiphy then he wouldent comit suicide and do benofecail things. i think its absalutly apaling that sumone should do good bassed entirely off a lie its esentualy self imposed slavery

Sylvester_Inksays...

It doesn't work like that, Westy. Plenty people have a good understanding of real philosophy and still end up committing suicide. Often suicide stems from emotional issues, rather than rational thought. (Though not all the time, of course.) Thus combating suicidal tendencies doesn't always lie in rational thought. As humans, emotions often make us toss rational thought right out the window.

And is it appalling for someone to be doing good at all? If he's doing good because of something he believes in wholeheartedly, of his own free will, then how can it be appalling? How can it be slavery? Sure he was taught these things when he was growing up, but it was his choice whether to accept and believe in them or not. There are plenty who choose not to. If he has the freedom to cast aside his beliefs whenever he wishes, then it is no form of slavery.

On another note, religion can't be referred to as a lie, because it has yet to be proven true or false. There are those who believe there's sufficient argument for a certain religion to be true, and thus they follow it. There are those who find that there's enough argument that there is no religion, so they don't follow it. So from point of view, religion can be true or not. But to this day, there's no way to conclusively disprove most religions. One can't go and say "There is no god, and that's a FACT" because that fact can not be proven. Therefore, one can't refer to it as a lie, but merely a conjecture.

i would argue that the bible is proven to be not true and thus christanity a lie. I have yet to see anny evidence that juses "the juses" as described in the bible evan exsisted.

This guy is absolutely AMAZING. The atheists on this site can criticise and condemn all they like, but I bet if they met him in person, they'd be too inspired to put any thought into his religious beliefs.

Sylvester_Inksays...

Westy, the Bible has not been proven false. Only misinterpretations have. (I assume you're referring to things like the world is only 6000 years old or whatever that was. The Bible does not make that claim, only people who have made assumptions about certain parts of it.)

And if you mean whether Jesus existed, that's a definite. The only argument is whether he did the things he did.

well, i know it's a touchy subject and all, but THE MUSIC REALLY REALLY SUCKS. i would definitely take christianity more seriously if it didn't attract the worlds worst songwriters. See cartman's christian rock band south park for more details.

Sylvester_Inksays...

Mink, I TOTALLY agree with you! There are 3 types of categories that I place the Christian music I hear.

The one in this video is more of a modern-day praise music genre, most of which are simple, repetitive, and BORING. The music mainly stems from various Christian rock bands and the like.

The next genre is the older music, some of which was composed earlier this century. Also notable is the Zion's Harp. (A very well known songbook.) These are more traditional sounding hymns, that have a bit more complexity and are a lot more enjoyable to listen to. (For me at least.)

And finally, there's the old-style classical stuff, done by Bach, Handel, etc. I think everyone can agree that this stuff is awesome.

But in any case, it all depends on the listener. There are those that would definitely enjoy this music. I'm just not one of them.

It has to be stressed that Nick is an incredible guy... I admire him. I think this and his other videos are great. But his father's a pastor, and his parents were surprised by his condition when he was born. Do fundamentalists not use ultrasounds?

Most people are reasonable, but the gap in innate diseases & deformities between supernaturalists and mainstream society is going to continue to increase as technology advances over the next 100 years.
