spoco2says...There's nothing inherently wrong in looking at the bible as something written of the time, by people of the time with all their prevailing bigotries etc. And also to treat stories like Noah's ark as STORIES. I mean, they're supposed to be morality tales, NOT literal fact.
It is utterly scary that people... SO MANY people believe them to be fact... utterly... utterly insane.
brblitzsays...Pointing out how ridiculous christian religion can be. I'd much rather die for a perverted sex fantasy like a bunch of virgins. Or prove that my goD is merciful and powerful by protecting his holy land with bombs and guns. It's all so silly that I'm going to sign up for scientology; a religion that is proven by science and makes sense.

who are you to say that it was not intended to be taken literally. I ask because this is an opinion that is heard a lot these days, but I've never heard someone explain how they deduced it.

Only that it's unfathomable to believe otherwise. Well, it is if you believe in goodness in people I guess. The idea that someone would write such utterly unbelievable tales and then present them as fact tells of a really shady and dishonest person.
For the same person to come up with such fantasy tales and present them as morality tales in an attempt to get their point across speaks a bit better of them. Not that much better mind you as they still come across as misogynistic, vengeful and contradictory bigots... but still, better that alone rather than that plus bald faced lying.
