MSM Greatly Understates Oakland Protest Attendance

Troutsays...

Ah, Yenk ALMOST makes the most salient point here, but not quite:

If the MSM highly under-reports the unprecedented size of the crowd (or, worse, doesn't mention it at all) yet DOES cover the video-friendly "things on fire" part of the story, that alone can imply that violent behavior is a significant part of the larger protest movement. When it's clearly not.

I'm no "crowd expert" either, but that mass of marchers was huge. When 99 percent are well-behaved and non-violent, that's impressive. As always, the real problem lies with a selfish & destructive 1 percent. (See what I did there .)

This is very worrisome to me.

Why the media blackout?

Can someone PLEASE explain it to me? What is going on? This is obviously news and people do actually have an appetite for this. This is news that would sell.

I am starting to feel like one of those conspiracy people.

@CaptainObvious
Just like rich people won't eat beans and cornbread,
News managers (the persons who run a story, or stick a story in a drawer)
have a bias towards news they think is important to their target audience.

If this "news manager" is trying to get Bill Gates to watch the news, he's going to run a segment on the new Microsoft Zune, going to run
* Cancer survivor gets a new puppy
* Apple sauce day is tommorrow in sticklick county
* Can Ipods cause traffic accidents?

So, the protest doesn't fit on the menu.

another reason is that the definition of impartiality is difficult to understand. If 10K lefties protest, does that mean I give Michelle bachman equal time with the protest?

The media blackout is an attempt by some to stop the movement from growing. That's about it.

See the Real News stuff on here a couple times. Not sure of their website or if it's rolled up in one of the others, but the guy I see doing the interviews seems to let people finish their thoughts and asks questions that seem on point instead of inflammatory.

Because the mainstream media is liberally biased. DUH!

It's getting ridiculous. This march has happened in every state and yet it's getting almost no coverage. Even as it continues to get stronger in different areas like Oakland. The fact it isn't heavily covered smells very rank... And...if you want to explain the behavior of the MSM then you have to look to reasons that all basically smell of conspiracy except for rank ignorance. But, ignorance across all of the networks? It could be that they don't think it's worth the money, but this is tracking very well on the Internet--making that excuse sound hollow too.

So I'm left feeling like an invisible hand has shut them up...

The problem is they're just marching. There's little sensational or much conflict to report on. That's what sells media. The trick is how to get into the media without doing things that will turn the public against them.
