In the last James Bond Movie featuring Pierce Brosnan, he and the bad guys were riding one of these. I remember a clip where he talks about these... must have been about 1 or 2 years ago. Pretty cool!

This is a segment from the DVD "Step into Liquid". Great video about some of the biggest waves in the world. Fun video to watch on a very large screen, with a very good soundsystem.

hydrofoils have been around for quite a long time. apparently as early as 1910.

Great video. The obvious challenge is, unlike a surfboard, you can't swim out and start to ride on it, you need the guy on the Waverunner plus locking skiboots, etc.
