Ellen 1, One Millions Moms 0

I think of JC Penny as an ancient brand. Kind of like Marks and Spencer. Anything they can do to leverage some publicity, well good on them. Is it really a human rights issue, though, that she supports it? I think she is leveraging her sexual politics to promote a historically traditional brand. Each mention of the name she gets 100k, or something like that. Do you really think she shops there? Has anyone seen her shop there? Perhaps she gets truckloads of merch just by implying she shops there.

No hate implied, I used to love Ellen. Now she is kind of like Relish - I am not sure if I like her or not. It just seems like a poorly contrived ploy. IMHO.

Definite Streisand Effect for the AFA here, I think.

I doubt most people would give a crap about Ellen being JCP's spokeswoman if this hadn't been turned into a circus. Now that it has, people are going to go out of their way to make a point and there's a lot more people who side with Ellen than AFA.

"...leveraging her sexual politics to promote a historically traditional brand. Each mention of the name she gets 100k, or something like that."

Oh, god...

She defends herself against bigots and, yes, bullies, so she's somehow participating in "sexual politics"? JCP hired HER, and she certainly doesn't control the ignorant ramblings and activities of One Million Moms.

"Historically traditional brand"? WTF does that even mean? Do you mean "before there were gays"? Or do you think JCPenney sheets and pans and clothes and waffle irons were originally meant to represent some sort of imagined conservative lifestyle? Or maybe you just mean "old", which doesn't mean shit.

We stand squarely behind Ellen as our spokesperson and that’s a great thing, because she shares the same values that we do in our company. “Our company was founded 110 years ago on The Golden Rule, which is about treating people fair and square, just like you would like to be treated yourself. And we think Ellen represents the values of our company and the values that we share.” - Ron Johnson, JCPenney CEO

Who knows if she shops there? Does she have to? Maybe someone shops there for her. She used to work there in the 70s, but that probably isn't enough for you. What if she just moves into one of the bedroom displays? They could put up plexiglass so none of the 40,000 One Million Moms could spit on her. Do you think Troy Aikman and Hulk Hogan actually rent shit from Rent-A-Center? Or that Jared Fogle doesn't have a BigMac once in a while? Or that Ricardo Montalbán actually enjoyed the soft Corinthian leather of his very own Cordoba?

I'm sure there are many, much more important things you can spend your time being ignorant about.

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag.(show it anyway)

Begun, the culture wars have. And brands are realising they can't stay neutral - (see the Komen debacle).

Ha. The best part is the last line where they ask him if he's wearing a JC Penney outfit - you can feel the cogs turning quickly in his mind.

This does come across as her trying to shill JC Penney to me. It's up to her, but if I watched Ellen this would annoy me. The rest of it, the important stuff, good on her!

Related: I fucking hate studio audiences. "I've recently teamed up with JC Penney..." "WHOOOOOOOO!" - geez, she's the one getting paid, not you. Why would you shout and scream at this? I guess there's an audience prompter telling them too but that's embarrassing. Be happy for someone you respect and admire, and don't be crazy.

On a more serious note. Does "1 Million Moms", or shinyblurry and such like, see this as any different to 40 years ago, a chain of stores hiring a black person (an openly black person!) as spokesperson and urging a boycott?

If so, why? Because The Good Book™ makes one reference to lesbians being bad? (And of course, no references about judging other people...)
