Apple and Foxconn: Who made your iPhones.

CNN's Stan Grant talked to a Foxconn worker in China about conditions in factories where Apple products are made. Feb 6, 2012 ..."

Just remember, it's not just Apple using Foxconn.
longdesays...

So many factory workers in Asia, South America, and even parts of the US that make consumer products are subject to these conditions. This focus on Apple obscures that fact that most products people buy were made under conditions some would consider harsh.

As bad as the folks in Foxconn have it-and that is a hard life- if they stayed home in western China, they would have a much worse life on the countryside. There are literally lines of people waiting to take their jobs and benefits.

I really doubt a countryside life is really that hard. more like they need cash so bad. theres' a small difference, i hope you don't mind me pointing it out.
and foxxconn is probably better than a lot of companies.

remember, it's our laws for international trade that allow these people to exploit workers in china.

No, I don't mind; money is the primary reason.

I don't see how it's our laws that allow this to happen. I think pressure from US companies and US import laws probably helped to raise working condition, at least a little, rather than the opposite.>> ^marinara:

Yeah, I think the URL is being broken because its too long for the UI. Link shortened should fix that.>> ^ant:

I hope the reporter was being misleading with the details of the girl's factory tasks. Because it wouldn't be too hard to track down an english speaking factory assembler with that girl's profile.

longdesays...

How do you know that @coolhund ? Have you checked the books of the other manufacturers? Just because a product isn't sexy doesn't mean it can't be wildly profitable. And the last I checked, Foxconn uses economies of scale to achieve profits. That means that if it weren't for Dell, HP, etc also buying from Foxconn, Apple would not able to get such a deal.

longdesays...

I was not saying that, but it well could be true. First, Apple's volumes are not as high as other phone and PC vendors. And they use alot of unique and high quality components for their industrial design. So their product costs are probably higher. >> ^coolhund:

Apple products are generally more expensive than the ones from others, while having at least the same quality. Mostly inferior, though.
Youre saying Foxconn charges Apple more? LOL!

longdesays...

My point is that, if you are mad at apple, you should be angry at whoever you purchased your PC from. Whatever you are typing on was assembled in the same conditions, probably worse, because of the lower profit margins and lower public scrutiny.

coolhundsays...

Oh yeah, thats prolly why Apple makes that much profit then. Because they get charged more and only put that on the consumer price. LOL

My point is that Apple is the worst of them all. Making much more money on these working conditions with less quality items and not putting that money to the workers. That alone is reason enough to not like them as much as others.

longdesays...

No...they make that much money because people buy apps, music and movies off their website and through said devices. The hardware part of the business is not nearly as high margin as you think it is. Your sympathy should go to the actors and writers who are not getting their piece of the pie.

And, a serious question, how much should an assembler at an Apple/Foxconn plant make?

The suicide rate at Foxconn is much lower than the rate in China. So if you make apple ipads, you are actually LESS likely to kill yourself than the general population.

You are forgetting that for a relatively uneducated chinese person from a rural province, life is harsh. A gig at a Foxconn factory is hard, but there are much worse options out there.>> ^coolhund:

Enough that they dont kill themselves...
