Genovese Syndrome
Actually, in the just-published Superfreakonomics, they look at the Kitty Genovese case, and discover that there are a great many misperceptions, not the least of which is that people DID call the police. The first attack, a stabbing, happened out in the open, but due to the poor lighting, it seemed to be little more than a domestic dispute, and when he was challenged by a bystander, the attacker seemed to flee the scene. Genovese staggered into an enclosed area, while her attacker moved his car to get it out of sight. He then returned, and proceeded to rape and kill her with zero witnesses. The point of the chapter, I suppose, is that a great deal of scholarship relies upon the version of events first reported in the New York Times (that there were three separate attacks with over a dozen witnesses) that were later refuted by police.
Pretty interesting. I'd like to think that I'd be the one to call 911 if I was ever a witness to such an event, even before I was aware of the Genovese Case. I just think I would consider the notion that with a crowd of witnesses, most will think that someone else has already taken care of the problem.

Reality TV Show to Convert Atheists
Not sure about the popular attitudes in Turkey, but I'm afraid if something like this ever aired in the US it would feature faux Atheists who "saw the light" at the end of most shows. A real atheist could not be convinced because they're familiar with the common arguments and circular logic used by religious types.
It naturally follows that someone who is atheist is extremely familiar with logic and reasoning, and has considered all the arguments for the existence of god and found them lacking. Atheism is the conclusion of reasoning, not some random thing people decide they are one day.

Funny that this should come out of the country who leads the world in ridiculous
a) protecting children from all and any harm they could ever, possibly do to themselves (don't let them play with ANYTHING that could in ANY conceivable way hurt them)
&
b) sue the shit out of anyone you possibly can if anything goes wrong, shift blame, refuse to accept that you had any fault in your mistakes.
Let your children experience things, let them make mistakes, let them learn to cope and grow from said mistakes, do NOT teach them to blame all and sundry if something doesn't go right. If something bad happens, learn from it and move on, don't try and make a profit from it.
F ck people's attitudes are depressingly self centered these days
Funny that your response to a harmless inspirational video was to get angry.

Bill Maher Gets Schooled On Vaccines By Bill Frist
>> ^nach0s:
That's why I love the sift. We can love and hate our political commentators/figures at the same time. Frist is not perfect, he has his own issues (Terry Schiavo, anyone?) but Maher is wrong on this issue, imo. Frist makes a good argument, and it isn't a shouting match.
This is just what I was thinking.
Still, I wish I knew what to think about this. I normally lean towards not bothering with a flu shot, but I heard on NPR yesterday that 40% of the people being hospitalized for swine flu had no pre-existing conditions.
I have seen someone get extremely ill after getting a flu shot though, and even though I know that it's unlikely, it still comes to mind every time I think about vaccinations.

Those are definitely people legs on the little raptor.
Yeah, kind of a bummer. I was really impressed before I noticed that. Still amazing though. I saw the other dinos attached to rigs and I was thinking that the raptor had some cool gyroscope thingy to keep it's center of gravity under control and... oh, its got people legs and gray sweatpants.
