28 Weeks Later: First Look

Head explody at 51 seconds!!

Personally I thought the first film was excellent, I couldn't pick out many flaws. I'll be excited to see this one even though Danny Boyle isn't directing.

Monitoring your cell phone?

Baqueta says...

Pho3n1x is basically correct. The antenna wouldn't normally be on at all when the cellphone is switched off, but whoever developed this would have worked with the cellphone manufacturers, and if you go in at the OS level it would be surprisingly trivial to implement something like this. One firmware 'upgrade' and you're done. It's possible, though less likely, they would even be able to do these upgrades remotely.

Extremely Fast Choreographed Wushu Fight

Baqueta says...

Pyrex: Either you're mistaken, or I've misinterpreted what you've said. Wushu doesn't have any sparring, and certainly doesn't have any full contact sparring. These choreographed fights are as close as it gets. Kung fu does have sparring, but there the vast majority of it is a long way from full contact (e.g. no punching to the head, no kicks to the legs).

Personally I think Wushu's just as worthwhile as any other martial art, depending upon what you want to get out of it. It isn't going to help you much at all in a real fight, but it's damned good exercise and a lot of fun...

Queen - We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions (Live Aid '85)

Baqueta says...

Absolutely phenomenal band, but I don't think this is them at their best at all. The crowd is so massive that everything has to be belted out at top volume, and that doesn't leave any room for subtlety in the performance.

Just my tuppence. I still thought it was worth an upvote.

Sigh, another guy to knock out.

I gotta disagree with you on your first point, Rembar. Even the first UFC tournament banned biting and eye-gouging, so we've yet to really see the effectiveness of the really vicious stuff like that against grappling. No disagreement that it's no good if you're already on the ground grappling, but the point is to avoid getting in that situation in the first place.

I'm not trying to start an argument over what's better, cos we both know it depends on the situation to a large extent anyway. I'm just saying, in the war against bullshido we gotta be vigilant at all times!

Will Ferrell: Story Time with Neil Diamond

Baqueta says...

This clip is full of jokes about death, pornography, racism and drugs. I just had this strange inkling that it might be frowned upon in some politically correct offices. If it's fine where you work, then lucky you.

Oh, and when did being on TV become a reliable indicator of anything? There are plenty of clips on here that have been on TV but aren't suitable for work. Janet Jackson's nipple? The foreign language 'art films' they show on Channel 4 here in the UK?

If I'm in the minority here, and most people think it doesn't warrant the tag, I'll remove it. Until then, you can bite my shiny metal ass.

P.S. Finally popped my sifting cherry. Yaaay!

George Takei responds to Tim Hardaway's homophobic comments

Baqueta says...

Ladybug: I'd have more respect for him if he stuck to his guns. That said, I don't see how it would be possible for him to do that, as his feelings would have to be grounded in some rationality, rather than just being plain old ignorance (as you quite rightly point out).
