If your New Year's resolution is to quit smoking...

00Scud00 says...

The smokers seemed more amused than anything else really. Maybe they could make a better one that detects what brand you're smoking and makes pithy comments. Or one that detects weed and starts to get stoned.

Today on C.G.W.-Cop Goes Into GTA Mode And Runs Down Suspect

CelebrateApathy says...

Holy fuckin jesus man, how do you not get that this is unacceptable behavior? In no way was this conduct justified. If the suspect ended up pointing the gun in the cops direction then you may have an argument for the cops using force on this person. This was completely the result of person that had no ability to reason how to handle the situation. (the cop by the way in case you wanted to try and turn this statement into a pithy reply) That is their JOB. Having the ability to reason when faced with unreasonable situations.

If you are indeed affiliated with law enforcement, YOU are the reason people should be justifiably suspicious of the ability of law enforcement personnel to make reasoned decisions.

What does that mean...turnabout is fair play?

As for the nutcase depicted, did the cops have information that he was trying to commit suicide-by-cop? Or did they just have information that he was the suspect in a crime spree including a home invasion, the theft of a gun and the discharge of same in a public place?

If he was walking toward some people with a gun and what the cops believe to be criminal intent or being out of control with the gun, then they are justified in using lethal force to stop him and protect innocent lives.

I don't know too many people who would be willing to just approach the guy and give him a pamphlet of mental health resources in the county.

On the other hand, we did have a dispatcher who would have offered to give him a hug.

Stephen Fry on Meeting God

messenger says...

He isn't looking for answers. He's already decided what all the answers are: Yahweh.

He's trolling with rhetorical questions that imply that he knows something without actually stating anything that can easily be refuted. If he merely suggests something by asking a question with a between-the-lines suggested answer, that can never be challenged as long as he ducks and dives with pithy and meaningless comments like, "When I have questions I look for the answer. If you have no questions, just keep on keeping on."

He'll never actually state anything that is refutable. And I don't mean he'll say nothing that's incorrect. I mean he won't make any statement that could be logically refuted IF it were wrong. He'll only state his personal opinions and ask questions. I couldn't be bothered to go back and look through his comments, but in this thread he hasn't contributed anything that belongs in a disagreement.

Intentional or not, he's a troll. Move on. I just "ignore"d him.

newtboy said:

Funny you ask questions but 'aren't looking for an answer', maybe because you feel you already have an answer you feel is right? Feelings can be wrong, you've proven that.

Morality is important because people live together, and without morality you get only chaos. Morality, and/or empathy have evolutionary benefits and are behavioral evolutionary constructs. Those without it are shunned from/by society and so don't reproduce as often as those with it. That's just one difference it makes, but a big one.

So, you know these things about yourself, but if someone else points them out they're a bully? Thicken your skin if you intend to stay on the internet is my best advice, that and read your posts as if they were written TO you before hitting 'submit', if you do that honestly you'll find you display the same behavior you complain about.
I point out to you that @offsetSammy made a great point in his second paragraph you ignored completely in order to call him names.

Scotland's independence -- yea or nay? (User Poll by kulpims)

ChaosEngine says...

So, when you can't refute the points of fact I made, you just make pithy comments? Got it.

I stated an opinion. There's no hubris there. Jesus, I even qualified it with phrases like "I see no reason" and "I don't believe".

"I see no reason for Texas to secede, so I don't believe it's warranted"

does not equate to

"there can be no possible reason Texas should ever secede, and I am the arbiter of whether it should or not"

If you can provide me with a legitimate reason for Texas to secede, I'd consider changing my opinion. Right now, the only arguments I've heard for Texas to secede have been essentially thinly-veiled racism and right wing propaganda.

And we haven't even touched on the fact that the vast majority of Texans don't actually want to secede

edit: just in case you didn't realise from the or the fact that I flat out stated it to @newtboy, my original post was tongue-in-cheek

Jordan Vs Muhammad Ali Epic Rap Battle

I'm not sure what that all meant, but I can sense that you are surprised/disappointed by my comment. Not to backtrack, because there is something that certainly struck me as odd and upsetting when I realized what the makeup artist had done here, but my comment was pithy to a fault; inappropriate was the wrong choice of words.

I have thought several times about it since I first made the point, and 'offputting' or 'disturbing' might have been better. I am not offended (specifically because I am white, so what the fuck do I have to be offended about) by the use of makeup in this case nor do I think that it violates some moral code (of which I am but a subjective arbiter). Rather, I think it was so poorly done as to draw attention and detract from the end product.

Blackface can be done right (a la Robert Downey Jr in Tropic Thunder) and it can be done wrong (e.g., every privileged white kid who dressed up as Trayvon Martin this Halloween). In this case, it was done wrong, if only subtly so.

Black face being inappropriate to your personal sensibilities regarding historically offensive stereotypes but not offensive at all when prompted by a passionately opportunistic "trigger" for your particular brand of robotic pontification, the "evil" of racism being the most IMPORTANT and most DELETERIOUS indicator of ignorance or a lack of current-events knowledge or moral character.

Fuck making blackface an issue, it's as tired as the cardboard box of enlightenment you stand on to set yourself above the huddled masses...

Pastor Pretends to be Open Minded in Sterile Modernist Room

ChaosEngine says...

Actually, I did get your intention, and I'd planned a much longer response, but I got distracted and just ended up posting that pithy comment.

But yes, I understand the argument is not so much "we are clay" as "we are as clay".

I can completely accept the possibility of some kind of hyper-advanced species that absolutely dwarfs us in intellect. In fact, I think it'd be really cool if such a thing existed. But I have a sneaking suspicion that actually, it doesn't really get a whole lot better than us. But that's only because I'm a cynical bastard and tend to believe that most species wipe themselves out before attaining that level of awesome.

But let's say that there is some kind of hypothetical super genius race/being out there. They should *still* be able to talk down to us. There are certain fundamental mathematical truths that are constant in the universe. As dumb as we are, we have already figured out ways to communicate using these (CETI, etc). Surely super intelligent beings would be able to respond even if it felt like talking to a particularly stupid child to them. Again, even we manage a very primitive form of communication with animals.

artician said:

I appreciate the vote for my intelligence, but I was hoping my intended conclusion would be more understood.

What I basically meant by that was: what if what clay is to us in the difference of perceived intelligence, happens to be what we are to a supposed higher-being.

You can never rule out the impossible, and as much as I believe in human kinds miracle of existence and legitimate accomplishments on the human-scale, I can never agree to be so egotistical as to not accept the possibility that I am far less consequential than a molecule in some other unfathomably-complex creatures universe.

In the end: doesn't much matter! We should just all have sex to our hearts content, and make sure everyone like us is warm at night and well fed.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren on Republican Shutdown Threats

ChaosEngine says...

Honestly not sure what your point is here.

Are you saying I don't understand how fucked up your system is?
Or that you appreciate how fucked up it is and I don't?
Or that it's not fucked up?

I'm all for pithy responses, but you really need clarity as well as brevity.

Wealth Inequality in America

aaronfr says...

@renatojj
A government enforcing property rights and contracts and punishing fraud is a government intervening in the economy. Perhaps your pithy original comment wasn't meant to imply you actually wanted the government all the way out of the economy, but there was nothing there to stop me from reading it that way.

I don't think government is the whole society, but I also don't ascribe to your view of what government does. "Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed." Must have been Marx who said that.

The two main pillars of socialism are social ownership of the means of production and cooperative management of the economy. I'm sure you don't agree with the first one, but if you want to remove government from the economy, wouldn't that require 'cooperative management of the economy'? So, can I assume you are at least a half-socialist?

Killing Us Softly: Advertising's Image of Women

dystopianfuturetoday says...

Seriously, didn't we leave this kind of sexism behind in the 80s?

I don't fully understand why my fellow white males get so uptight and defensive when it comes to the topic of sexism, racism and other types of prejudice. Is it some kind of misplaced guilt? Is it that we subconsciously know we have a good thing going on and don't want others rocking the boat? Is it that we don't understand the advantages white maleness has bestowed upon us and cannot empathize with those who do not have those advantages? Are we just over-sized monkeys? I really don't know.

I don't think there is anything even vaguely controversial about the points she is making here. Advertising is sleazy. It preys upon our fears and insecurities. It promotes greed and self loathing. It promotes mediocrity in film, news media, television and music. It provides financial support to the worst elements of both government and business. And, it targets men too. How many of you drones use overpriced "Axe" deodorant because your subconscious mind thinks it will get you laid.

This presentation is smart, pithy and right on target. Those who don't get it should keep watching it in a continuous loop until your consciousness evolves to a higher level, you fucking primates.
