I was absolutely stunned to hear about this on the radio the other day. Police here in my home city used civilians to form a roadblock on a freeway and made them sit in their cars (some with children in the cars) while a fugutive hurtled at them, eventually crashing into a number of them.

Just utterly inexcusable, how they ever could think this was a sensible idea is beyond me.

What the fuck. How can anyone be forced to risk their lives like that? The police have a choice. These people did not. I am so glad to hear that this didn't happen in America.

You know i told myself there just HAD to be more to this story when i saw the title... then i watched the video... and wow.. just wow... Has to be one of the most irresponsible uses of authority i've seen in a long time. Really just incredible.

Yeah, when I first started hearing about it, I thought they were leaving out pertinent information, but nope, the head of police tried to make it sound like it was a 'rolling blockade', but it was most definitely not, the cars were stopped for a couple of minutes, at a standstill, when the car crashed into them.

They'd been tracking the guy for over a hundred kms, how could they not have had time to get out countermeasures or do something else other than just park a bunch of civilians across a road?

What's the problem? They're just Australians.

Just a silly joke.

Might have been an accidental quote, and he was just saying that.

I think we'll have to go on Judge Judy to find out what damages he owes me.

Dude why are you making this personal...it was just a dumb joke, not a window into my mind.

Don't worry everyone, the chief has said there will be a Review which will certainly get to the bottom of the incident and ensure the officers responsible are reprimanded, and possibly charged with reckless endangerment.

After all the maniac had to be stopped. What if he'd hit someone?

Porksandwich says...

Thought that was why you paid taxes so they could buy all those cop cars they wear out and smash into everything....use them to stop psychos and get destroyed...because that's why they were purchased?

Would have taken......like 6 cop cars parked nose to tail to span that entire highway then put another 4 behind them to stop the guy from blowing through the first line. And then they could be off to the side waiting to aerate the vehicle with their guns.

One semi pulled sideways, chop the dudes head off when he hit the trailer.

What's the alternative besides complying with this kind of order? You're screwed any way you go, just one might end up with you smashed into your steering wheel.

That many people should be able to muster up a nice big lawsuit to discourage that kind of decision again...and buy a big gas guzzler of a road tank so if it becomes common you'll survive to sue again.

PS: Use small children next time, have them hold hands and stand in the way...it'll work.

And also the civilians will get free counselling, so everybody wins.

Sure, it seems illogical in the short term, narrow-perspective "operation civilian meat shield" view, but you've got to take the long view on it.
By forcing him to crash into civilians, now you've got a few extra charges to keep this reckless nogoodnik in the slammer for a few extra years. That's good for ALL of society. "Needs of the many" and all that.
Heck, if it's a fatality accident, then maybe he's a guest of the state for the rest of his life. A small sacrifice to pay.

Gutspiller says...

For some reason I was expecting a video of a bunch of people holding hands, lined up across the road. You should probably mention it was civilian CARS that were used as road blocks. I would have sifted the shit out of this if it were actual civilians.

spoco2 says...

>> ^ghark:

What doesn't compute is why they made the people stay in the cars?

I think it was because the speeding car was not that far behind and they figured they were safer in their cars being hit rather than being in various states of getting out of their cars when he smashed into them.

Why don't the cops just drive close to him and use EMP power up? Newbs.

Don't cop cars in Australia come with banana peels?

That's a GREAT idea! Next time the police should just ask all the civilians to throw out their banana peels, turtles or squid instead of forming a road block.
