Noam Chomsky spoke at Third Boston Symposium on Economics on February 10th 2014, sponsored by the Northeastern University Economics Society in Boston, MA.
Chomsky argued that certain factors, among them cutting federal funding for research and development and the growing gap between the richest 1 percent and every¬body else, have led to the country's current economic climate.
"The system is so dysfunctional that it cannot put eager hands to needed work using the resources that would be avail¬able if the economy were designed for human needs," Chomsky said. "These things didn't just happen like a tornado, they are the results of deliberate policies over roughly the past generation."
Chomsky focuses on what economic actions that government, the super rich and corporations are doing that insures the US and other economies fail for the overwhelming majority of people. We're a nation whose leaders are pursuing policies that amount to economic suicide.
This video also includes an extended 14 minute question and answer period with Dr. Chomsky..

Trancecoachsays...Chomsky has a poor understanding of economics with reference to things like economic calculation, for example. He does not see/understand the mechanisms of a free market that would make anarchism possible and thus keep it from turning into chaos. Maybe from a metaphysical perspective, as in karma, we get what [government] we deserve, but we should nonetheless strive to overcome our bad karma, and do good deeds such as getting rid of the need to impose on others through the state apparatus.
Yogijokingly says...Yeah Chomsky doesn't understand, he must not have done his homework.

Trancecoachsays...And neither have you.

A10anissays...Once again the harbinger of gloom, doom, chaos and destruction, sets out his familiar stall.
He sites "facts," showing that commons held by the public succeed, as opposed to privatisation. But he doesn't appear convinced by his own rhetoric as he adds; this is "usually true." What facts, and where?
"Canada has become the scourge of the world with its (climate) activities." Really? How about China and India with their coal powered CO2 emitting plants? At the moment China is the largest emitter in the world but India will soon pass them as they are building 455 new plants whilst China is "only" building 363. Does he ignore these facts because he prefers, as usual, to constantly berate the west?
Once again he bemoans the top 1%. Well, the top 1% in the UK contribute 30% of the tax revenue. I've said it before, he is a prophet of doom with no palpable solutions to what he sees as military, financial, and social chaos.
I can assure him that there WILL be future historians and, if he is remembered at all, it will be as a foot note example of despondency.

coolhundsays...First you need to learn the real meaning of anarchism.
I am really tired of explaining people like you the difference between anomie and anarchy.

Trancecoachsays...1. What's the 'real' meaning of anarchism, if not absence of a state?
2. "people like you," meaning what/who?
3. What's the relevance of the difference between anomie and anarchy to Chomsky?

coolhundsays...Read at least the Wikipedia articles about those. If you really ask those questions, and I need to remind you that you brought that BS up, its clear that its useless to argue with you.

Trancecoachsays...Haha! So evasive! If you think I don't know the 'real' meaning of anarchism, or what it has to do with anomie and Chomsky, then asking me to read wikipedia does nothing to support your point (if, indeed, you had one, which it appears, you do not).
I don't think wikipedia will answer what you mean by "people like you" or what the difference between anomie and anarchy has to do with Chomsky.. But if you think it can, I'm all ears.
But you did stumble upon some truth: "it is useless to argue with you." You're right, and I don't know why you would even want to try.
Typical reply, evasion, non-answer.. You can't defend the indefensible. So I doubt I will ever get a coherent argument from your position.

coolhundsays...The real meaning is in the wikipedia articles. Its simple. Only because media and other idiots use it wrong, doesnt mean its that way. Read it. I am not being evasive, I just know I am wasting my time on an ignorant troll. Even with this short additional comment. You have just proven it again.
Have a nice one.

Trancecoachsays...All the time that you've spent telling me to read the Wikipedia article and find the hidden relevance of anomie to Chomsky and the "real" definition of anarchy (that is not the absence of the state) you could have used to simply make your point (if you even had one at all). That, to me, is the definition of evasive.
You don't know what you're talking about, or else you wouldn't be so evasive -- and yet spend so much time writing nothing, name-calling, and trolling.
Six sentences and not one addressing my questions. Clearly 'wasting time' is not a real concern of yours.
