I think it is an emulator that allows him to save mid game and reload to the save point. A lot of those Mario runs you see uses it.

This is why anyone playing with an emulator should learn what old-school adventure gamers learned two decades ago: save early, save often, and DON'T USE THE SAME DAMN SAVE EVERY TIME!
