Sagemindsays...I somehow feel it's wrong to medicate when we just don't know the true effects on children...

SlipperyPetesays...an incredibly important story. these drugs are overprescribed off-label not just in children, but also in the elderly. these were developed and approved for treating bipolar disorder and schizophrenia in otherwise healthy adults. the clinical trials did not include enough children or older adults to be considered to have sufficient power.
it should be said this class of drugs can be quite effective for treating the conditions for which they were originally approved.
also, that voice-over announcer needs a kick in the throat.

tsquire1says...A.D.D. itself has no physiological basis. Alot of these 'disorders' are just a method of bussiness for pharmaceutical companies.
This is an important issue, but the 'fear music', camera zoom ins, dark lenses, stock video footage of drugs, when they say doctors they show some people in white coats walking and talking, and the narrators irritable voice and tonality causes nothing but fear mongering
peggedbeasays...i've been bitching about this for years. my exhusband has a very real psychiatric disorder, but in the years we sought treatment he was over medicated over medicated over medicated, which only turned a sick man into a monster. we were spending over $1000/month on his meds, with health insurance. he had siezures, hallucinations, cried uncontrollably, lost his sex drive, lost the ability to feel love, lost his hair, gained or lost weight rapidly, had the shakes, and visual disturbances (very dangerous considering he was an electrician and a welder and built massive cranes for a living) etc. when i questioned the doc i literally got yelled at and called names. (we switched docs after that one of course) but its more of the same, none of them really know what to do and pharmacuetical kick backs are sweet! he was admitted to the psych hospital on several occasions, but on this one in particular, they admitted because he was so severely over medicated they needed to ween him off all that shit, then discharged him 3 weeks later with prescriptions for xanax, klonipin, wellbutrin, paxil, seroquel, and risperdal, WTF? its fucking sick. and in the end he chose to be unmedicated rather than go through that anymore.
now he lives under a bridge self medicates with meth and booze and gets beat up in homeless shelters.
my biggest fear for my kids is that they will inherit this shit, its coming at them from both gene pools. im even more terrified that i will either freak out at the first sign of mental instablity and rush to have them evaluated and medicated, or be so scared of diagnosing them of something they dont have, that i will ignore the warning signs until its too late.
its a scary balance.

Bull. Shit. ADHD has neurodevelopmental and genetic causes and it is well established by imaging studies that there are many physiological changes in the brains of those with ADHD.
It's a sad fact that the field of psychiatry has been overlooked for so long, with people writing off psychiatric diseases as "made up" with no real physiological causes. There is still so much stigma out there, but at least the scientific community have begun to embrace the legitimacy of psychiatry. Funding and research is increasing, and hopefully one day we can avoid the kind of tragedy that peggedbea and her family experienced.
Memoraresays...Mass diagnoses of ADD/ADHD is 100% Bull. Shit.
It's caused by corporate greed preying on lazy ass parents who can't be bothered to properly raise their own bratty kids and just want a quick pop-a-pill fix to normal childhood misbehavior.
A little good old fashioned common sense Discipline (gasp!) during the very early years would eliminate nearly all of this so-called "disorder".

Yeah, bad idea.
I work in a psych group home, out of ten clients I have 8 that have developed symptoms due to long term illegal substance abuse.
I work with all the drugs mentioned, along with more damaging medications such as depakote, clozapine, and haldol. Believe me when I say that these meds can cause some major damage to an adult much less a child, and that is with on label medication.
There is a terrible flip side to my argument though. These meds can do harm, but they can also do a lot of good. The problem comes when a client takes a down turn. I had a client that was ready to move into her own home, was an elderly woman who was unsteady on her feet. She had a pretty bad fall that lead to a temporary hospitalization. During her hospitalization her family physician claimed the problem was due to overmedication. Over two week off her meds the client became paranoid and was exhibiting severe auditory halucinations. Even when she was placed back on the meds that had balanced her she didn't recover. The damage had already been done.
If I had my PHD, it would be a last resort for me to prescribe any psych meds to a patient initially, because I know that it will be a steady increase of medication to keep that patient funtional, until finally they are on depakote or clozapine and the meds start causing kidney damage.
