They were native peoples with an invading force swarming over their homeland and a counter force who'd made them their indentured slaves. Not many options, really.

You'd do what anyone told you to do, with a gun placed to your head, too. Would your family cry 'unfair' when you were then hanged for that action because it didn't help the other bully who wanted you to do something entirely different? Yep, I rekon they would.
