Umm Kulthum was an Egyptian singer and musician (1904-1975). More than three decades after her death, she is still recognized as "the Arab world's most famous and distinguished singer of the 20th Century. From wikipedia:
"She had been reffered to as "The Lady" by Charles De Gaulle, and is regarded as "The Incomparable Voice" by Maria Callas, Umm Kulthum is remembered in the Arab world as one of the greatest singers and musicians who have ever lived. It is hard to accurately measure her vocal range at its peak, since most of her songs are recorded live, and she was aware not to strain her voice too much due to the extended rendition of her songs. It is known that she had the ability to sing as low as the second octave, as well as the ability to sing as high as between the seventh and the eighth octave at her vocal peak; yet she also could easily sing over a range surpassing two octaves near the end of her career. Her remarkable ability to produce approximately 14,000 vibrations / second with her vocal chords, her unparallelled vocal strength (no commercial microphone utilized for singing could withstand it's strength, forcing her to stand at a 1-3 meter radius away from one), her ability and capability to sing every single Arabic scale, and her voice's unique and breathtaking beauty that surpasses convention that never deteriorated with age, arguably makes her the most incomparable voice of all time. Her incredible vision and originality as an artist allowed her to take the compositions and the lyrics of her songs to a different level that her composers and poets were not able to take; which is reflected in her timeless and incomparable work, which continues to amaze the world. Even today, she has retained a near mythical status amongst young Arabs. She is also notably popular in Israel among Jews and Arabs alike, and her records continue to sell by the million every year."
This song - Do You Still Remember - is one of her most famous. The English lyrics:
Do you think that my heart will still give you trust? Or one word will bring back what used to be? Do you think that my heart will still give you trust? Or one word will bring back what used to be? Do you think that my heart will still give you trust? Or one word will bring back what used to be? Or do you think that one look will re-connect the longing/yearning with the affection?
Do you still remember
That was in the past
Do you still remember
That was in the past
Do you think that my heart will still give you trust? Or one word will bring back what used to be? Do you think that my heart will still give you trust? Ah! Or do you think that one word will bring back what used to be? Or do you think that one look will re-create the tenderness and passion?
Do you still remember
That was in the past
Do you still remember
That was in the past
In my heart, all my days were spent in tears... that was my life. In my heart, all my days were spent in tears... that was my life. In my heart, all my days were spent in tears... that was my life.
How often you took my love for granted! So each time my tears ran they wiped off my hope in you and my patience.
In my heart, all my days were spent in tears... that was my life. In my heart, all my days were spent in tears... that was my life. In my heart, all my days were spent in tears... that was my life.
How often you took my love for granted! So each time my tears ran they wiped off my hope in you and my patience.
In my heart, all my days were spent in tears... that was my life. In my heart, all my days were spent in tears... that was my life. In my heart, all my days were spent in tears... that was my life.
Words! words! are all that are left now. My love has vanished with my wounds. Words! words! are all that are left now. My love has vanished with my wounds.
Words! words! are all that are left now. My love has vanished with my wounds.
What I suffered in the dark nights. What I suffered in the dark nights. What I suffered in the dark nights. Has been forgotten in the light of morning.
Today the love, the tenderness and the passion. Today the love, the tenderness and the passion.
When you ask about them I will say they were in the past. When you ask about them I will say they were in the past.
Do you still remember
They were in the past
Do you still remember
They were in the past
You enjoyed seeing my heart suffering. Suffering caused by your cruelty and empty days. You were listening to my "ah's" as if they were music. While I was burning the fire of their echo.
Fire, fire which slowly, slowly melted our love. You enjoyed my suffering and preferred cruelty and did not appreciate my love.
Ah.... ah... ah...
You referred to my dark sorrowing nights thinking of you, as a game but for me that was part of my precious life.
I have decided to enquire about the meaning of all my doubts and tears.
While you were enjoying yourself. Seeing me worried and confused.
You referred to my dark sorrowing nights thinking of you, as a game. Tell me. Now you know the end, what do you want from me? Have you come longing for my love or my tears and suffering?
Today love is a story "once upon a time"
When you ask me I will tell you
It was in the past
Do you still remember
It was in the past
