can someone explain this tradition to me? I've seen videos of Uday Hussein doing this at functions. Sitting alone in the corner firing guns in the air. I don't get it.

@aspartam: Third World fireworks I suppose. Firing into the air is commonplace for celebratory reasons, at least in the Middle East / Central Asia. I'm told there's lots of it in Afghanistan, and a videoclip I saw about Iraq (from a US soldier's perspective) made the point that if you hear gunfire and it's a Thursday afternoon, assume it's a wedding.

I think they assumed that the guy wouldn't be stupid enough to hand a loaded weapon to a child.
