The case of the ,Jena six- Racism in Louisiana - pt 1

In September 2006, a group of African American high school students in Jena, Louisiana, asked the school for permission to sit beneath a "whites only" shade tree. There was an unwritten rule that blacks couldn't sit beneath the tree. The school said they didn't care where students sat. The next day, students arrived at school to see three nooses (in school colors) hanging from the tree.

The boys who hung the nooses were suspended from school for a few days. The school administration chalked it up as a harmless prank, but Jena's black population didn't take it so lightly. Fights and unrest started breaking out at school. The District Attorney, Reed Walters, was called in to directly address black students at the school and told them all he could "end their life with a stroke of the pen."

Black students were assaulted at white parties. A white man drew a loaded rifle on three black teens at a local convenience store. (They wrestled it from him and ran away.) Someone tried to burn down the school, and on December 4th, a fight broke out that led to six black students being charged with attempted murder. To his word, the D.A. pushed for maximum charges, which carry sentences of eighty years. Four of the six are being tried as adults (ages 17 & 18) and two are juveniles.

I need to know the whole story to actually support this. 'Democracy Now' is an ultra ultra liberal media, and sometimes they're so far up their ass that they only see one side of the spectrum...

But this being Louisiana... There's a good chance that this was a plain good ol' racist community.

"a fight broke out"

what you meant to say was that 6 african americans attacked a lone white kid and nearly beat him to death. kinda leaving that part of the story out, and a bit one sided.

I have to downvote this. This is simply one of the worst pieces of shitty journalism I have ever seen. Exactly 0% of the evidence against the defendants for the allegation of conspiracy is explained to the viewer, the DA is not interviewed, the victim of the crime is not interviewed, the superintendent of the school is not interviewed, an arson event is virtually unremarked upon, it goes on and on. 90% of the story is spent on simply garnering sympathy for the defendants through interviews with their profoundly unlettered yet justifiably angered parents and on questioning a clueless random idiot librarian. It is unthinkable that these kids could deserve the penalties being sought by the DA against them, but this is the dumbest possible presentation of the story I can imagine.

Nearly beat him to death? Not quite, he was at a school event that night. Couldn't have been hurt too badly. The odds and anger I won't defend, it wasn't productive, but it was a beating. Not attempted murder. Should have been charged for what it was. From what I've read some white kids in the town weren't charged at all where they should have been for beatings or threats with weapons of their own. Probably part of what lead to this.

Best I can tell the whole situation is screwed. Lots of those small southern towns are a couple or few decades behind the rest of us in some ways.

http://www.colorofchange.org/ has a petition on the subject as well. I don't agree with all of their issues but it's another source to keep up with a side of things the press doesn't cover much.

what do you belive is "good" journalism. does nbc follow the rules of only presenting crap that sells.some times people reject being interviewed. please comment on the nooses and the whites only tree. this is the dumbest possible presentation of the story you can imagine. no need to imagine if you are not sure of your self why not go look for some of the facts. i dont see videos always an end in themselves. they a sometimes lead you find out more for your self. spoon feed views are not what i want to see.

bias and racist. I'm choking on this shit. If your going to present a case present both sides not just one. Journalist should have been a lawyer, it's more reputable to take one side in that profession.
