The Pixies Performing "Gigantic" at Lollapalooza '05

The Pixies are an American alternative rock band formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1986.[1] The band disbanded in 1993 in acrimonious circumstances but reunited in 2004. Black Francis, Joey Santiago, Kim Deal, and Dave Lovering have been the band's continual members.

The Pixies found only modest success in their home country, but were significantly more successful in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe, although never achieving mainstream success with their studio albums. Gigantic is from the <ahref="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surfer_Rosa">Surfer Rosa album.

I am a huge pixies fan, I saw them once in the early 90s, and I've followed Frank Black in the intervening years. I am happy to see this on the sift.

However... I feel this was kind of a bad performance. I think Black's opening vocals were sloppy, Santiago's playing in the beginning and a few other parts feels distinctly off-pitch. In general it seems a little... low energy. OK, I guess the pixies aren't the young rock stars they were 15 years ago, I guess I'm not either.

It's kind of funny I remember being a little shocked by each and every one of the pixies albums, and the first 2 frank black albums. They seemed so... loud and hard. I don't know how to explain it. Looking back at them it sometimes surprises me that they are tamer than I remember, probably because the intervening years have seen mainstream rock go for the same level of noisiness. When I saw Santiago play I was just blown away, I thought he was going to hurt himself or someone else, he was frantic.

It's true that the Pixies had only modest success in the US. 15 years later I hear more people claim to have been at their shows than can possibly be true. I think this is a little bit like how my dad claims to have listened to the doors but probably listened to 3 dog night.
