The Internet Gets More Expensive: Per Usage Billing

The CRTC recently allowed ISPs to charge users based on usage, not unlike your electric bill.
mysdrialsays...

Except, unlike the electric bill, the surcharge per gigabytes has no relationship with the cost of providing such services.

This is actually just a "kill Netflix" play by Rogers & Bell. It's disgusting, and the CRTC is a sham of a regulatory agency.

I switched from Shaw to Telus this month... I'm so glad I did after seeing this.

This is insanity. Canadians already pay more for less when it comes to internet and other forms of technology and now they are wanting to tack on a charge for something that doesn't cost them any more... a pure money-grab. Sickening.

This is inevitable. We have been spoiled by unlimited data plans. The simple fact is that the more people use the internet, the more it costs the providers to keep up. HOWEVER, we will need the government to make sure there is healthy competition so that there isn't a complete disconnect between provider costs and end user price.

I think at one point in the summer our family was around 210 GBs for ONE month. Comcast is sitting at 240 or 250 right now in our area. Primarily three sources caused it: 3 PCs, one XBox 360, various storage or otherwise Internet/Network connected gadgets. These are the specific sources that use so much bandwidth: Netflix (HD & SD), Internet Surfing & Usage + XBox 360 & PC Games (download and play), Digital Purchases (HD, SD, backups, Games, and music), and then miscellaneous streams and downloads (but, these would be less that one gigabyte)

It's the digital media that causes the most usage; especially HD rentals or purchases (each weighing in at 4-9 GB each).

Telus is not gonna do the same as Shaw? why?

Skeevesays...

Nope, Telus is not going to do this. There is another video on the same topic on the sift that has an interview with Telus and they basically call it like it is: a cash grab. They spent millions of dollars upgrading their hardware and know that bandwidth costs them so little that there is no point in getting the bad press and customer hatred that this would cause. Shaw, on the other hand, has old tech and thinks this might be the way to finance it.>> ^zomgunicorns:
