TED: Charter Cities - Paul Romer's radical idea

"How can a struggling country break out of poverty if it's trapped in a system of bad rules? Economist Paul Romer unveils a bold idea: "charter cities," city-scale administrative zones governed by a coalition of nations. (Could Guantánamo Bay become the next Hong Kong?)"

Fascinating.

*Update* Wouldn't Haitians benefit from having a modern city on their island with modern building codes?

Hmmmmm. No thank you, Paul. Sounds a bit fishy-the kind of big fish that fancy themselves creators of new and improved areas of control....eugenics would no doubt be a part of the brave new third world.

^Yeah??-He's an economist speaking in terms of a model in play that needs to be eradicated before it evolves into another wholesale eugenics nightmare(which it is doing)-His "vision" assumes that the current paradigm will click along unchallenged...which makes him either in collusion with the assholes on the planet, or simply another intellectualizing, useful, idiot.

Read between the lines concerning his background and credentials, his associations etc, and he looks like another fucking tool-

I think that planned communities should be on this century's "To Do" list.

Clean cities. Walkable cities. Self-sufficient cities in terms of food production and waste disposal.

It's worth trying in the "market" way, as I believe this man is proposing, but I think there are other ways to do it, too. And I don't think we necessarily have to start from scratch, but we do need coordination and a plan.

And yes, "opt in" only, or it's not worth the trouble.

I'm sorry, but what favorable for the community decisions has "The Market" ever come up with? I can't think of any, the Market is grossly inefficient and I don't see this idea working at all. Also you can say the same of Charter Schools and how you can "Opt-in" to them. That's ridiculous, Freedom without Opportunity isn't Freedom at all, it's a devil's gift. As we've seen what the system does is destroy public education for years until people will get fed up and choose Charter. It's largely succeeding as well, that's not a decision made by the market it's a conscious decision made by policy makers. Destroy public education because educating the public is ridiculous, why would we want to do that?

^Would you prefer to be born as an illiterate Chinese or Cambodian peasant than be born in Hong Kong or Singapore? Would about Afghanistan vs. Dubai? Development and investment aren't the worst things in the world.

All of Haiti's problems are solvable. They own an island that should be a coveted tropical paradise with a steady stream of tourism revenue. It doesn't seem balanced that they'd prefer earning $2 per day instead of allowing the international community to build a profitable charter city.
