Mavensays...this is really interesting, but I doubt they are living the high life by importing cans from other states
finch451says...Meanwhile, there are dozens of crack dealers within 20 miles of my home getting away with it.
MINKsays...yeah how much did that police operation cost?
the deposit system in lithuania basically works like welfare, nobody claims their deposit, that would be embarassing... the done thing is to leave it for a "member of the homeless community".
well, you think that's what you are doing, but actually there's a whole mafia of bottle collectors with territories and a heirarchy. One guy said he takes the bottles back to the shop in his car... "what, you think because i collect bottles i can't afford a car?"
however, the deposit system makes much more sense than smashing up the bottles to make new bottles, and it makes much more sense than throwing away aluminium.

rustybrookssays...The state governments have created an opportunity for arbitrage here, by making recyclabe trash worth vastly more in one state than another. I should ship cans from tx to somewhere that pays for them (no deposit in TX, and you can't get much for turning them in for recycling)
The report makes it sound illegal to bring cans in from another state, which seems odd. Wherever they come from, they're being taken off the road sides, parks, landfills, etc, etc SOMEWHERE and being properly recycled. That's good, right? If the consumers in your state are willing to pay money to clean up cans in a neighboring state, I can think of why you might find that less than ideal, but to make it illegal? Weird.
How about just making the cans worth 10c nation wide? I guess then they can import soda cans from mexico.
rustybrookssays...Oh, and when I was a youth, collecting bottles was something kids did for cash. I grew up in Iowa and you could get 5c per can. A garbage bag full was easy to get in an afternoon and was worth several bucks.
BillOreillysays...that's Michigan for ya-- charge extra for pop cans and then get screwed out of millions in the process...
