Sea Shepherd Ship Plays Laser-Tag With Japanese Whalers

The ship is called the "Ady Gil" and was previously known as "Earthrace".

It's purpose is apparently to play chicken with Japanese whaling ships and deploy a variety of sonic and optic weapons at them, in the hopes that they will pick up and go home.

I really don't know of any company that would allow their ships to return home because they were being "annoyed" by some lasers and sirens. I think the whole Sea Shepard/Whale Wars thing is a giant waste of money and time. Anyone know any figured about how much these people have affected the whaling industry?

I'm guessing the affect has been zero. This is not about saving whales. It's a big power trip for Captain Fatass and a thrill ride for his cabal of hippies.

I'm not taking sides on the whole 'whaling' issue. I can see both perspectives on this. I do believe that if you're serious about stopping whaling you're not going to waste your time acting out pirate fantasies in the antarctic.

BTW, isn't that a multi-million dollar boat? What could possibly be the advantage of that thing over a semi-rigid speedboat? Apparently being on the Discovery channel is allowing these guys to fully realize all their teenage fantasys.

Lasers and such aren't going to stop whalers but international awareness has and will continue to stop whaling... lasers and these games are interesting enough to show up here so it increases international awareness.
