Ron Paul - Iowa Straw Poll

Well, I still think he's the most interesting candidate, even though I really don't track with a lot of his views re. gun control and abortion.

He doesn't start his speech until 2:40 btw. He drops the 911/2nd amendment bomb at 6:15.

hmm, I think he said it clumsily. I've heard him say it other ways that seemed more eloquent. He is refering to airline pilots having guns, NOT passengers. While I don't agree with all of his views, I would vote for him because he would steer us back towards the constitution values our country was built upon. The Bush pendulum has swung pretty damn far and now it's time for it to go the other way.

Wow, I was a big fan of ROn Paul, but this speech makes it pretty clear. He's politician liar through and through. Say anything to any crowd. What a bozo, he's more of the same Republithug continued policies except that he gives lip services to the Constitution.

If he had any integrity he would realize that abortion is a States right issue, schooling should not be national, and the nonsense of homeschool and private online high schools do not deserve our tax dollars to make some fundie corporation rich at the expense of communities and local public schools. I agree with 2nd amendment, but come on, you really think allowing everyone on an airplane to carry a handgun?? Really?? Is this any bit reasonable in any regard? I mean sure, militias, right to bear arms, promote the hell out of that. But how does that apply to interstate travel in an airplane? The concept is arm populace to prevent tyranny and threats foreign and domestic and protect property and liberties. How do you go from that to interstate travel has the right for every half-wit to carry on board a tool that can potentially bring down the whole plane? Where does that nonsense stop? 18 yr old high school kids have the right to arm themselves in schools? How about criminals in jail? (why is that outlandish?)

qrell, keep making apologies, but he says "we weren't allowed to resist hijakers" and then goes on to say airlines even weren't allowed to protect their investments.

Two complete independent thoughts. And why the hell do you think pilots are somehow qualified. It's one thing to say that airlines could put guards on the planes, or arm stewards, but really, a pilot is doing their own thing. And probably and most qualified guerilla warrior. Plus there are only about two people on the plane that you do NOT want in a shoot out, that being the two that can land a plane. You want someone in the back row of the plane with a scope and a rifle with clear view.

Yo Joe. I didn't say I agreed with him, so I wouldn't put my comments in the "making apologies" column just yet, I would put my comments in the "clarifying" column :-)
I was pointing out what I've heard him say in other videos, which he did not state clearly in this video.

while I might not agree with Ron Paul's stance on several major issues, I think he is the most consistent candidate because all of his views are derived from constitutional principals. He also has the most consistent voting record in line with his views.

here's a really simple and interesting way to find out which candidates share your views without the name recognition getting in the way.

well THAT was eye-opening. I know a lot more about his beliefs and policies than I did before... starting to understand why he's a fringe candidate even though he makes it to the front page of Digg every day. I wonder how many people are rooting for Ron because they only know about a small subset of his policies? Or maybe it's just a reaction to the atrophied state of American politics.

"Let me assure you as an OB doctor, and as one that has studied history, and economic policy and politics for a long time, I can assure you that life begins at conception."

WTF? What a complete non sequitur, and a despicable attempt to convince his audience that his theological views have a rational basis. (There is no basis for choosing conception as 'the moment life begins' other than a theological basis, and any philosophy undergraduate will gladly explain that there is no such thing as 'the moment at which life begins'... but I digress.)

The last thing the world needs is another religious nutbag for President of the US.

And yet... he's still the only sane choice for Republican candidate. What a sorry state of affairs.

I hate politicians who throw around the "pro-life" talking point to get cheers. Governments fund abortion because if they didnt women would be going into back alleys with coat hangers to get it done. "Pro Life" It's a health issue, by getting rid of roe vs wade aren't you putting more lives in danger? Getting rid of roe vs wade is a step backwards, why should leaders have the power to choose what woman do with their bodies? Giving women less options, less freedom. wtf Ron Paul?

qruelsays...

not to defend ron pauls stance on abortion ( i disagree with him).
but... I've heard him explain it differently before when he wasn't talking to his base and he described it as a state issue than a federal government issue (like almost all of his view points)

Um, tell me you've noticed that ALL the candidates are religous nutbags. there is not one atheist in the bunch on either side.

There seems to be a lot of misunderstanding about Ron Paul.

Ron Paul is not saying the pilots or passengers or the crew should be able to bring guns. What he says is that the airlines should be able to protect themselves - whether the pilots, stewards or guards should carry guns - it's upto them to decide. It's their property, they know best how to protect them. Let's assume for a moment, that an airline does allow passengers to bring guns. Do you really think that their business will survive ?

Though he didn't make it clear, he has said elsewhere, that abortion is a state issue. By getting rid of Roe vs Wade, he is giving more power to the states to decide on that. From his website: "I am also the prime sponsor of HR 300, which would negate the effect of Roe v Wade by removing the ability of federal courts to interfere with state legislation to protect life."

qruel - yeah, i know... but part of me is hoping that at least SOME of the candidates only *pretend* to be believers since to do otherwise is electoral suicide (what is this, the 16th century?). Ron Paul is going a step further (granted, he's not alone) by indicating through his policies that he really DOES believe and that he's prepared to let his beliefs dictate the decisions he would make as president.

(But then he has the cowardice to suggest that his stance on abortion is somehow based on facts to which non-doctors/historians/economists/politicians aren't privy.)

Guys this is the Iowa Straw Poll. Which in the larger scheme of things is completely irrelevant (there is no straw and you pay $35 to vote, no one does that so candidates usually pay that by busing supporters, most come for the free food), this is why the most vocal groups consist mainly of activist conservatives than actual mainstream voters, the reason there is a tilt towards pro-life issues, gun control and reduction of taxes.

I think Ron Paul doesn't really have a chance, Mike Huckabee came off more of a winner then Mitt Romeny who basically bought the poll by sinking nearly 2 million dollars into adverts, tents, food and buses to garner as many people as possible.

I really don't believe that it is for cheers. It is his own personal belief.
And althought I do not agree with his views on abortion, I still think he is one of the best things for the US. Smaller govt is the way to go and you won't have to fork out thousands of hard earned money to be flushed down the toilet by departments too large to handle.
