A non-episodic after school cartoon where the characters live and die and entire themes and settings of the show can change over the course of the story arc? This was our warm up to series like Babylon 5 and BSG. Oh and it was being aired during the days of the original G.I. Joe cartoon.. pffft.
So what's going on in this clip? The Zentradi, a genetically engineered warrior race has been attacking earth to retrieve a ship that crash landed on our planet. Before they could get here we retrofitted it, reverse engineered it's technologies (giving us the transforming mecha capabilities) and made it our own ship. The Zentradi were unhappy about that.
At this point in the story the only Zentradi humanity has seen are giant four story tall males, so it is assumed they're all four story tall males. Now in comes the four story tall FEMALES earth has no idea about, they're segrageted from the males, never allowed to co-mingle outside of combat, and they're superior pilots in every way. One has taken it upon her to attempt to take out our best pilot.
"Run little man, run.".

thats from the newly remastered 1979 american release, but if you like robo-tech..check this space opera out.
Draxsays...Starblazers is another good one, and yes I watched that one too. >D Robotech had a much more dynamic story to it though. Things changed much more dramatically, and well.. as you can see the animation was often pure eye candy.
dethetersays...Battletech > robotech
siftbotsays...Moving this video to Drax's personal queue. It failed to receive enough votes to get sifted up to the front page within 2 days.

I've never seen it though, might try.
Currently watching the obscure and epic Legend of the Galactic Heroes
videosiftbannedmesays...I picked up the Protoculture box set a few years back as I used to love watching Robotech after school while growing up. I made it through the Macross saga but just couldn't get into the Zentradi (sp?) section. I need to do that as I remember the Invid section being really cool. One of these days.
Oh, and I never realized it when I watched through it while I was younger, but did Mimmei ever do anything but whine and sing that damn song over and over?
