Robot Handwriting in Action

I found this video in an article linked from Bruce Schneir's cryptogram. Clive Thompson was sorting his junk mail when he found a legit looking handwritten letter... only to find it was an invitation to take out a second mortgage on his home... he'd been duped! The article actually points out some ways that you can tell the difference, for now.

YouTube Description:

Watch as the robot writes out a card using a regular ballpoint pen! As you can see, the end product is nearly indistinguishable blah blah blah

Clever bit of engineering.

I'm not sure that it's really practical for junk mail though. It took nearly seconds to write one line, so at a generous 5 minutes a letter, it could do a whopping 20 letters an hour. Hardly seems worth it....

In the linked article Clive Thompson points out that the competition for this slow and expensive robot is school teachers!
