Prince of Pot Becomes Martyr

Global News: Exclusive Interview with Marc Emery in Jail
This was the top story on the 11:00pm News in BC.

Marc Scott Emery (born February 13, 1958) is a Canadian cannabis and libertarian activist, as well as a former cannabis seed seller. United States government officials have described Emery as a drug dealer for his efforts to sell marijuana seeds nationally and abroad. He is the publisher of Cannabis Culture magazine. He ran for mayor of the city of Vancouver in 1996, 2002 and 2008. He is often referred to as the "Prince of Pot".

1. Prohibition is not the answer. Marijuana, if not all drugs, should be legalized or, at the very least, decriminalized.

2. We should not be extraditing Canadian citizens to another country for a crime committed in Canada. (Marc was not selling marijuana in the United States, he was selling to Americans from Canada.) Should Iranian-Canadians who give up Islam be extradited to Iran to be executed if Iran asks us to?

3. Unfortunately Marc was breaking the law and should have known better than to sell drug paraphernalia to citizens of a country obsessed with drug laws.

I've met the guy a few times, and to be honest he's a bit of a creep, always hitting on little girls, but besides that, what he is doing is wonderful, somebody had to step up and do it.

To say that he doesn't deserve it would obviously be true, but to say he shouldn't have expected it would be false, he's been pushing their buttons for a while now.

ok, so I'm confused about the case (and none of the articles clear it up). Perhaps some canadians can answer:

1) is pot illegal in Canada (Vancouver specifically) ?
2) was he selling to Americans in USA ? (mail order seeds maybe?)

Next we'll hear the US government try to extradite all the marijuana "cafe" owners in Amsterdam....

I found this TIME article about Colombian drug lord extraditions to the US - http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1881510,00.html
about 2 per week are sent to US for trial/jail, and it has done nothing to slow down the drug "war", and in many cases hindered local prosecutions in Colombia.

What I don't understand is why is selling seeds an offense? You can easily buy magic mushroom spores online, because the spores contain a little or no traces of psilocybin. Wouldn't marijuana seeds fall into this category? There can't be any real amount of THC or other cannabinoids in the seeds. And I have yet to find ANY pot smoker who smokes seeds intentionally.

What he has been charged with (by American lawmakers) is not illegal in his home country. He has never committed the offense on American soil so there is no legitimate reason for him to be surrendered to the U.S..
