Police Taser Sons Attempting to rescue drowning father

California cops tasered a distraught son whose father was drowning after he and his brother complained that police were not doing enough to rescue their dad, while authorities prevented the two sons from making any kind of rescue effort themselves.

Kid panicked in a stressful situation. It was his father. Understandable, yes.

Police knew what they were doing, and had to make the kid calm down in order to take command of the situation. Also understandable.

Looks harsh, yeah. Were the police doing harm? No.

I'm the first to jump on stories of police brutality, but I don't see that in this case, with one possible exception: the second tasering. THAT was over the top, but the first tasering, while it may have been avoidable as the filmer says, was an acceptable decision in the circumstance. It's a high-pressure situation requiring a snap decision, the kid is obviously distraught and taking out his anger on a proxy for his own helplessness, and that means he HAS to be subdued in some way.

saw a clip on the news about this; they noted something like 10 people had been swept off of the rocks and drowned at that point in the past year (apparently people hike down off the main trail).

This is exactly how NOT to deal with a situation like this. Stupid Fucking Cops and their tasers.

"I'll taser his brother, that'll calm things down"

I have yet to hear any kind of justification for using them in anything but self defense. Personally I think they should be banned altogether.

TBH, we don't pay them to stand around.
If they can't help, and won't try, then let the kids know right away so they can get on with doing it themselves.

Should not have prevented the kids from trying to save their dad. It's their life, their call.
Life, liberty, pursuit of happiness. Unalienable rights. A foundation of this country. It's not a cop's place to decide what risks someone can take with their own life.

If more people need rescuing, then so be it. That's what they're paid to do.
People pay their taxes, they are entitled to the services they already paid for.
