Not a big Penn fan, but this was great - especially his frustration at the end, palpable.

That pretty much sums up the Libertarian idea, doesn't it?
Spoon_Gougesays...I've never smoked marijuana either, so that's two.

Truckchasesays...Cocaine ≠ Marijuana
Legalize Pot yah, Cocaine no.
Memoraresays...The biggest benefit of legalization would be the immediate evaporation of the murderous drug cartels. Smuggling is profitable because the product is illegal.

I wish this were true, but they'd have to legalize ALL illicit drugs, and that's very unlikely. Legalizing marijuana would definitely take a chunk out of the problem, though.
KnivesOutsays...I'd wager that the cocaine is more profitable than the mary-wanna. I'm sure the cartels would still find plenty of people to kill over the cocaine.
The biggest benefit would be not stuffing the prisons full of 20-somethings serving 18 months for possession of dime-bags.
Psychologicsays...I'm not sure how I feel about the legalization of cocaine. There is a very strong case for it being dangerous and addictive, but you still have to ask "does prohibition work?"
Just because something should be illegal doesn't mean that it is enforceable. Maybe it really should be a public health issue rather than a criminal issue. If we took all the money we spend to track, arrest, prosecute, and house drug users and instead spent it on education and treatment then we might have more success.
I've never used it myself, but I know it is available in my area. Maybe it's time for a different approach there as well.
