New Bay Bridge San Francisco Time Lapse

From zero to hero in 4 minutes (reality was about 5 years). You can see one of the infamous Bay Bridge closures at around 0:20. Don't forget to watch in 1080p.

Something I don't understand is why does it only take one tower and cables at one end of the bridge to make it structurally sound? You can clearly see that the bridge goes on for hundreds of feet into the bay, so what is the function of that one section? It looks to be similar on the older bridge as well since most of the steel structure is on one side and then tapering off as it crosses the bay.

I think of suspension bridges like the Golden Gate and how they are symmetrical with towers and cables throughout. What is different here?
