Network - you people are zombies

sfjockosays...

tip to daphne for the suggestion -
This has long been one of my absolute favorite movies, and this clip is one of many powerful scenes.
Funny, in an ironic way, that it must have been snagged from Fox news, and they post a "news item" that in reality is fiction.

Back in 1976, when the movie "Network" was released, there were the big three networks: ABC, NBC and CBS. In the beginning of the movie there is a shot of side-by-side monitors of the evening news from the big three plus this network. This video is interesting because Fox became the fourth network in 1987.

That's not a real FoxNews headline. This is some stupid propaganda put together by a liberal who doesn't see his/her own hypocrisy.

The clip begins with what appeans to be a CNN fade out ... is there more to this clip than what we see?

People need to be glad we have more than one news service. Don't forget that every politician and news broadcast is in somebody's pocket. If you don't think that, you're not really a skeptic at all.

sfjockosays...

I partly agree with angelsvn. Partly. There is that weird news stuff, and also that background music is NOT in the original version. (It's Peter Gabriel's soundtrack for the Last Temptation of Christ)

I have been working on attaining a better copy, and I hope James or dag will indulge me in replacing this current unclean copy with a more pristine clip. My purpose in posting was only about the original content, not these other confounding layers.

Golly gee, angelsvn. While I did not create this clip, as a liberal, I hope you will let me know if my liberal stupidity leads to unendurable hypocrisy. Glad to be in the company of someone who can see things so much more clearly.

Sorry if this comes off as harsh, but I contend the comments about Fox News is valid. Among the newscasts, Fox news specifically stands out for its truthiness. The clip must have been from something else, I agree. I just bristle when I read an attempt to dismiss the point about Fox as "stupid liberal propaganda" -- when Fox was only a tangential point to the original posting. And seeing you speculate this unknown source is "propaganda" while you defend Fox News as being equal in sin to the other news sources... it just triggered a bit of verbal nausea.

I agree skepticism is required when getting one's news. I do not agree all sources are equal.

Interesting point the video is making, yet it assumes that book or magazine is an inherently superior form of media. A book, magazine, radio, literally *any* media form is subject to the producers. There are 'scolorly works' that site in University stacks that state the Holocost never happened. The Spanish-American war was instagated by 'yellow newspaper.'

Perhaps a better message to take from this is not 'TV is evil,' but to moderate and filter all media one partakes in.

sfjockosays...

Agreed lordnull. The situation which he describes is not too far from where we currently find ourselves, and it is far too complicated to be boiled down to "tv is evil." It is not a situation or dynamic lends itself to simplification.

The point, however, I believe, is about learning to think for oneself and develop a critical mind capable of rational thought and independed decision-making. And how such thought is antithetical to large corporations. And how when the means of media creation and promotion are controlled by large corporations, it is in their interest not to encourage independent critical thought, but rather ... entertainment, soothing mind-numbing entertainment, or whatever the mass of consumers will buy the most of. Thinking can be hard work, and that is not what motivates people to turn on the tv, sit on the sofa, eat chips and drink high-fructose corn-syrup carbonated caffeinated sugar-free cola drinks.

I had wanted to request replacement with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avyr1UkX-_8 BUT...

Now I'm thinking..., since the sidesoift commentary applies to the adulterated version, not the clean original, I wonder if we should keep it as is, after all. The additional "FOX/CNN news" edits have become a part of the discourse here, so perhaps I'll just leave it here as a link, or for those who want to see another version/copy

Golly, Jocko, aren't you a little uppity. It is propaganda, because it meets the definition of propaganda. Go look it up. I didn't identify it as liberal propaganda, you did. You made that remark ... I wonder why?!

And why is FoxNews not a reliable source? Because they aren't in the same pockets that your sources are. Get it? You don't want unbiased news ... you want news that feeds your beliefs.

That's idiotic.

sfjockosays...

LOL. I am sorry to keep this going, but I have to respond to one thing your write, angelsvn.

You say of yourself "I didn't identify it as liberal propaganda, you did."

BUT your original posting claims:
"This is some stupid propaganda put together by a liberal who doesn't see his/her own hypocrisy."

Perhaps I somehow misinterpreted your statement as you labeling this as liberal propaganda. If so, it was a language mix-up.

I agree skepticism is always warranted. However my skepticism has led me to note that some sources are consistently unreliable, while others tend to be more reliable. It does not mean we turn off our critical minds when viewing the less unreliable sources. But it makes sense to me to survey the land and know what news sources offer what quality of reportage. As I wrote, I do not believe they are all equally invalid. As with the argument over evolution, I do not believe all sides are equal and that it just depends on your perspective. No, they are not equal: one side is wrong. A similar principle applies for me here, though granted I am more skpetical of ALL news sources than I am of established science in general.

There is a truth, and some sources seem to stray from it as a matter of course. Not all stray as far.

I have no more to say.
